Sonus Faber Duetto Promises Wireless Luxury

Sonus faber follows its Omnia with Duetto, a more traditional stereo pair of streaming loudspeakers.

Sonus faber's Duetto offers Bluetooth and Wi-Fi music-streaming abilities from a pair of the Italian company's trademark Lute-shaped wooden cabinets, with the main giveaway being the custom-designed heatsinks on the rear of these classy-looking bookshelf speakers.

The Duetto's spec sheet starts off fairly standardly, with the standmount loudspeakers being a two-way vented box design featuring a brand new 0.7-inch silk dome tweeter and, crossing over at 1900Hz, a newly developed 5.25-inch paper pulp mid-bass driver. The mid/bass unit sits in Sonus faber's fresh “Organic Basket”, designed to reduce vibrations and ease the level of airflow the driver produces. From here, there are changes to the usual Sonus faber playbook.

Chief of Design Livio Cucuzza told StereoNET:

Duetto is a true Sonus faber stereo system, blending 40 years of premium speaker design, Italian style and materials with modern technology and streaming features.

Firstly, the drivers are powered by a pair of onboard amplifiers with a 100W Class A/B amp assigned to the tweeter and a 205W Class D amp for the mid-bass driver. According to Sonus faber, the result is a frequency response of 37Hz – 30kHz and 105 dB @1m maximum SPL.

Direct control is via the Senso touch-sensitive interface on top of the speaker, which is made of leather, Sonus faber being Sonus faber. You can direct set-up, control volume, and switch between inputs and connections through this touch panel. Naturally, you can also use Sonus faber's app for more sofa-based conducting.

Alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth aptX HD, wired options include Ethernet, HDMI and optical digital inputs and even a built-in moving magnet phono input for a turntable (which is also switchable with line-level). Finally, there is also a subwoofer output should you want a bit of extra bottom-end.

Streaming options include AirPlay, Chromecast, TIDAL and Spotify on top of being Roon Ready.

The link between the speakers is via UWB (Ultra Wide Band) technology, which, we are told, guarantees a very wide frequency spectrum to send data signals at high speed and mitigates latency and interference in the connection between the two speakers.

Sonus faber's Duetto are available now finished in Walnut or Graphite wood veneer, priced in Australia at $6,995 RRP. Optional speaker stands are also available.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
