Musical Fidelity's new BBC-specced LS3/5A and LS5/9 loudspeakers will meet the public at High End Munich this week ahead of their release during the summer.
Joining the current fetish for retro-fi, the two-way standmounted LS3/5A (above) follows a BBC R&D design from 1976, while the LS5/9 loudspeaker (below) is a more modern proposition based on a design from 1983.
Based on the requirements for smaller rooms and used in mobile broadcasting vans, the more compact LS5/5A closed-box monitor features a 19mm domed tweeter partnered with an 11cm woofer. Resulting in a claimed 80Hz 20KHz (+/-3dB) frequency response with a 15 Ohm impedance and 82.5dB/W/M sensitivity.
Meanwhile, the taller, slimmer LS5/9 bass reflex design is fitted with a 34mm tweeter alongside a 21cm mid/bass cone. This manages a stated 50Hz - 20KHz (+/-4dB) frequency response and, according to Musical Fidelity, was intended to "Fulfil the complete range of music genres from classical to pop music". The LS5/9 also claims an 8 Ohm impedance and 89dB/W/M sensitivity.
The LS3/5A cabinet is constructed from birch plywood with a Palisander veneer finish and tips the scales at 4.9kg, while its 80s-styled sibling sports a light cherry veneer to its birch ply body and clocks in at 12kg per speaker.
The Musical Fidelity LS3/5A speaker is priced at £2,349/ €2,499 per pair, with the LS5/9 costing £4,099/ €4,500 per pair. Both speakers launch this summer.
As well as the two BBC-inspired monitor loudspeakers, Musical Fidelity teases us with a third model that "draws inspiration from the past and is fully prepped for today's audio consumer".
