Yamaha YH-C3000 & YH-4000 Hand-Crafted Audiophile Headphones

Yamaha's new YH-C3000 closed-back and YH-4000 open-backed high-end headphones promise audiophile-grade listening.

While better known for its motorcycles and musical instruments (hence the triple tuning fork logo), audio enthusiasts might associate the name Yamaha with its AV receivers and soundbars. However, with a fine heritage in high-end loudspeakers and other two-channel offerings, the storied Japanese brand has also delighted us with its Applause Award-winning YH-5000SE audiophile headphones, introduced back in May 2023. Its HA-L7A headphone amplifier is not too shoddy, either.

Building on the lessons learned from creating the YH-5000se headphones, the company has introduced two new models to join the range: the YH-C3000, a closed-back model, and the YH-4000, an open-backed variant.

Yamaha YH-C3000

The YH-C3000 closed-back design comes sporting a new armodynamic driver. This three-layer diaphragm combines Zylon (which can also be found Yamaha's high-end speaker drivers) with composite materials such as paper and resin. The new driver design also benefits from clever ventilation on the rear and a patented Y-shaped reinforced mesh damper.

Each hand-crafted housing is made from beech wood and features a black mirror finish. Beech is also used in Yamaha's grand pianos; chosen for its lightweight and rigid properties, and is said to promote a natural sound throughout its claimed 5Hz-55kHz frequency response.

Impedance is stated as 34Ω @ 1kHz, while sensitivity is claimed to be 94 dB/mW @ 1kHz.

The dedicated silk protein leather earpads are packed with memory foam, while the dual-layered headband, featuring a stepless slider, is borrowed from the flagship 5000SE model. Further adding to their wearability, the C3000 weigh just 330grams.

Additionally, to minimise leakage, there's plenty of vertical adjustment range in the swivel's rotation axis to get the pads sitting snugly.

Yamaha YH-4000

At first glance, it is easy to see that the open-back YH-4000 shares more similarities with its YH-5000SE siblings, so it will be of little surprise to read that the YH-4000 share the same orthodynamic drivers (also known as planar magnetic drivers) and driver housings.

However, Yamaha has purposefully removed the sound-absorbing material used in the flagship model and fine-tuned the sound to achieve "a uniquely responsive, natural and precise sound," they claim.

There is also a newly developed mesh filter for the housings that regulates internal pressure, and according to the manufacturer, it should improve midrange and bass performance while maintaining a spacious sound.

The YH-4000 has a claimed frequency response of 5Hz-70kHz and 97dB/mW @ 1kHz sensitivity. Meanwhile, impedance is rated at 34Ω @ 1kHz.

The Yamaha YH-4000 is blessed with the same ultra-lightweight magnesium body as the YH-5000SE, together with the same dual-layered headband, stepless slider, and tilting swivel mechanism. All in, the headphones tip the scales at just 320g.

We're told that the earpads have been developed exclusively for this model and combine high-quality artificial suede on the inner surface and flexible synthetic leather on the outer edge with a perforated surface.

The headphones are assembled in Japan at Yamaha's Kakegawa factory, which also builds the company's flagship grand pianos, so expectations on quality are high.

The YH-C3000 goes on sale in October, while the YH-4000 will be available from January 2026. Expected pricing is US$1,699 | A$2,999 and US$2,499 | A$3,999, respectively, with further pricing yet to be confirmed.
