Yamaha has announced a new firmware update for its current AVENTAGE AV receiver lineup, enabling certified Works with Sonos integration. The move brings seamless compatibility between Yamaha’s high-end AV receivers and the ever-popular Sonos ecosystem, further expanding their multi-room and smart control credentials.

Available now as a free firmware and app update, the new functionality supports all four current AVENTAGE models—RX-A8A, RX-A6A, RX-A4A and RX-A2A. When connected to a Sonos Port, users can power on their Yamaha receiver, switch to the correct input, and control volume directly from the Sonos app—making for a more unified home audio experience.

Ray Okada, Group Manager, Home Audio Group at Yamaha Corporation, commented:

AVENTAGE is our premium AV receiver line, the top choice for custom integration professionals and passionate home theatre enthusiasts, making it ideal for Works with Sonos integration. This integration exemplifies how our customers consistently gain powerful new features and capabilities through our firmware updates.

What’s particularly notable is that this enhancement arrives alongside—and not in place of—Yamaha’s own MusicCast multi-room streaming platform. All existing MusicCast features and streaming support remain intact, with setup and control still available via the Yamaha MusicCast app.

The dual-system support suggests Yamaha’s pragmatic approach to evolving user needs and market realities. While MusicCast offers extensive features and device compatibility across Yamaha’s ecosystem, the addition of Sonos support arguably acknowledges Sonos’ firm grip on the multi-room audio market, especially among users with mixed-brand setups or established Sonos infrastructure.

The Works with Sonos certification joins an already robust spec sheet for the AVENTAGE range, which includes HDMI 2.1 compatibility, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding, high-performance DACs, and support for 8K passthrough.

Both the firmware update for Works with Sonos and the MusicCast app are available now.
