Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones Redefine Noise Cancelling for 2025

Studio-grade tuning, smarter features, and a familiar fit – now with Post Malone on board...
Back in January, we reported on early signs of a refresh to Sony’s flagship headphones, with regulatory filings hinting at the arrival of the WH-1000XM6 (see our original story here). Now, Sony has officially pulled the wraps off the next generation of its award-winning 1000X series — launching globally from June 2025.

Building on the award-winning reputation of the 1000X series, the new model ups the ante with a completely overhauled noise-cancelling architecture, co-creation with elite mastering engineers, and smarter, more responsive audio features designed for how we work, commute, and consume content today.

At the heart of the XM6 is Sony’s HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3, now running at seven times the speed of its predecessor. With twelve microphones – 50% more than the XM5 – and an improved Adaptive NC Optimiser, Sony says the XM6 delivers its most precise noise cancellation to date, dynamically adjusting for both your environment and air pressure in real time.

The new 30mm driver unit has also been retuned for better bass response and finer detail retrieval. At the same time, Sony’s DSEE Extreme and LDAC technologies ensure Hi-Res and Hi-Res Wireless compatibility. The headphones support 360 Reality Audio and introduce 360 Reality Upmix for Cinema, which spatialises standard stereo content for a more immersive on-the-go movie experience.

But where the WH-1000XM6 makes its boldest leap is in its studio-grade sound credentials. Sony tapped mastering engineers from top-tier facilities — including Randy Merrill and Chris Gehringer of Sterling Sound, Mike Piacentini of Battery Studios, and Michael Romanowski from Coast Mastering — to voice the headphones with reference-level detail. Their fingerprints are said to be all over the final tuning, which Sony claims brings out the emotional and technical intent of every recording.

Mastering engineer Randy Merrill of Sterling Sound commented:
Sony has always been a benchmark for premium quality, and the WH-1000XM6 headphones take it to a new level. They transport me to a different world with their excellent bass, frequency response, soundstage and detail.
For calls and meetings, Sony has introduced a six-microphone beamforming array enhanced with AI-powered noise suppression, which it says will ensure you’re heard even in noisy environments. A dedicated mute button has been added for convenience.

Comfort hasn’t been overlooked. The XM6 keeps the familiar folding design but introduces a wider vegan leather headband, asymmetrical earcups for quick L/R recognition, and softer memory foam pads. Buttons and touch controls have also been refined for more intuitive use. At the same time, the updated Sony | Sound Connect app gives access to Game EQ profiles, scene-based listening automation, and deeper device integration with services like Spotify Tap and Amazon Music Play Now.

Available in Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue, the WH-1000XM6 also marks the debut of LE Audio and Auracast™ support, promising lower latency for gaming and future-proof wireless performance. Fast charging remains a key feature—three minutes of charge nets up to three hours of playback, with the option to listen while charging via USB.

As part of Sony’s “For The Music” campaign, global superstar Post Malone fronts the launch, praising the headphones for their sound immersion and detail, noting:
These new noise-cancelling headphones make you feel completely inside the music.
In line with Sony’s environmental goals, the WH-1000XM6 uses Original Blended Material packaging, made from bamboo, sugarcane fibres and recycled paper.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 will be available in most markets in June 2025, with an SRP of £400 / US$449 / €450 / AU$699.
