The WF-1000XM6 replaces the well-regarded WF-1000XM5 and brings a series of processor, acoustic and ergonomic revisions.

At the centre of Sony’s messaging is what it describes as its “best noise cancelling” performance yet. The company claims the WF-1000XM6 achieves a 25 per cent reduction in noise compared with its predecessor, particularly in the mid-to-high frequency bands common in aircraft cabins, trains and busy public environments.

The new earbuds introduce Sony’s next-generation HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e, working in tandem with the Integrated Processor V2. Microphone count rises to four per earbud, up from three previously, while an Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimiser is said to analyse external sound and wearing conditions in real time to maintain consistent suppression. Sony also highlights refinements to passive isolation, claiming the system now better compensates for sound leakage between the ear tip and the canal. New Noise Isolation Earbud Tips are supplied in four sizes.

Beyond active noise control, Sony is placing significant emphasis on audio performance. The WF-1000XM6 moves from 24-bit to 32-bit processing via the Integrated Processor V2, while the QN3e processor is said to improve DAC amplifier performance. A newly developed driver unit features a hybrid diaphragm construction, combining different materials for the dome and edge. Sony says the softer edge enhances low-frequency extension, while a rigid dome maintains clarity and treble precision. Additional edge notches are designed to reduce distortion and smooth high-frequency reproduction.

Support continues for Hi-Res Audio Wireless, DSEE Extreme, 360 Reality Audio, head tracking and a ten-band EQ accessible via the Sony | Sound Connect app. Sony also notes that tuning was informed by input from Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated mastering engineers, including Randy Merrill, Chris Gehringer, Mike Piacentini and Michael Romanowski.

Call quality has also been revised. Each earbud incorporates two microphones and a bone-conduction sensor, working alongside an AI beamforming noise-reduction algorithm that aims to isolate the user’s voice even in crowded environments. Sony describes this as its “best call quality” to date.

Wireless connectivity is said to benefit from redesigned antennas that are 1.5 times larger than those in the previous model, with Sony claiming more stable performance in congested RF environments. Multipoint connectivity is supported, and the WF-1000XM6 is LE Audio ready, potentially improving latency for gaming and future broadcast applications.

Physically, the new earbuds are approximately 11 per cent slimmer than the WF-1000XM5, with a revised form that better follows the contours of the inner ear. A newly adopted ventilation structure is designed to reduce internal body noise, such as footsteps or chewing, while the case itself has been reworked for easier one-handed opening. Finishes at launch include Black and Platinum Silver, with Sony describing distinct surface textures intended to differentiate the two visually and tactually.

Battery life is rated at up to eight hours on a single charge, extending to 24 hours with the charging case. Qi wireless charging is supported. Sony also states that the WF-1000XM6 incorporates 'circular materials', including up to 25 per cent recycled plastic. The WF-1000XM6 is available now, priced at US$329.99 | A$499.99 with additional pricing for other regions to be confirmed soon.
