AFEELA may be an unfamiliar name, but the project itself is a deliberate collaboration between two very different worlds. Conceived around Sony’s vision of the car as a creative entertainment space and executed using Honda’s vehicle engineering expertise, AFEELA 1 positions audio, gaming and software experience at the centre of the cabin rather than as optional extras.

PlayStation Remote Play differs from smartphone mirroring or aftermarket solutions, as it is integrated directly into the vehicle’s infotainment system. With a compatible controller and a PlayStation account, occupants can stream console-quality gameplay without relying on a phone or external display. This appears to be a clear extension of Sony’s broader entertainment ecosystem, indicating that the company views the vehicle cabin as a significant destination for interactive media.

While gaming integration will no doubt grab attention, the more substantive story might be AFEELA 1’s audio-first design philosophy.

Sony describes the car as being engineered from the outset around AFEELA Immersive Audio, rather than treating sound as a late-stage upgrade. The system uses 28 bespoke speakers, all newly developed by Sony specifically for this vehicle. The layout includes front and rear three-way speaker systems, centre and satellite speakers, roof exciters, twin subwoofers mounted beneath the centre console, and seat-embedded speakers for all four seats.

According to Sony, speaker placement was determined early in the vehicle’s development using acoustic modelling, with priority given to ideal listening positions over packaging convenience. Sony pairs this hardware with its own signal-processing technologies, including Monopole Synthesis — a technology that reconstructs sound sources in a virtual 3D space — and AI-based sound source separation that can extract vocals and instruments even from standard stereo recordings. Dolby Atmos playback is supported, but Sony stresses that immersive effects are not limited to native surround content.

Three listening modes will be offered. Immersive Theatre Sound utilises the majority of the cabin speakers to create a 360-degree sound field designed to envelop occupants. Hi-Fi Audio focuses on tonal accuracy and high-resolution playback for listeners who prefer minimal processing and a more traditional presentation. Zonal Sound allows different content to be enjoyed simultaneously across three independent listening areas, enabling rear passengers to watch video or play games — including via PlayStation Remote Play — while those in the front listen to music uninterrupted.

The vehicle employs Active Road Noise Cancellation, which combines Honda’s low-frequency road noise suppression with Sony’s mid-frequency processing via the seat speakers. The aim is to create a quieter acoustic environment where the audio system can perform without constantly compensating for tyre and road intrusion.

In practice, AFEELA represents Sony’s vision for the future of in-car entertainment, executed with Honda’s discipline in vehicle engineering. If that balance holds up in production, it could make AFEELA more compelling than many of the tech-heavy EV concepts we’ve seen so far.
