The company describes the AOS MC as a no-compromise, fully adjustable moving coil pre-amplifier housed in a custom half-width aluminium chassis. While the form factor aligns neatly with the brand’s current component aesthetic, the engineering inside is clearly aimed at more serious analogue systems.

Central to the AOS MC is a two-stage, all-analogue design with no digital control circuitry in the signal path. Rega’s engineers have deliberately avoided unnecessary components that might degrade performance, focusing instead on low-noise topology, symmetry and thermal stability. The circuit is based heavily on the award-winning Aura MC and uses parallel-connected, ultra-low-noise FETs configured as compound pairs. Rega says the use of FET devices means no bias current flows through the cartridge coil, avoiding any disturbance to the cartridge’s magnetic geometry.

A self-adjusting servo compensates for variations in ambient and operating temperature, maintaining stability without introducing additional signal-path complexity. The first gain stage is a symmetrical, complementary Class A amplifier using carefully graded and matched Linear Systems FET transistors, driving the passive high-frequency portion of the RIAA equalisation network. The second stage remains symmetrical and Class A, configured as a differential amplifier with a common-base driver that handles the low-frequency portion of the RIAA equalisation. The emphasis, Rega suggests, is on signal stability rather than feature count.

Designed to cater to a wide range of moving coil cartridges, the AOS MC offers substantial adjustability. Resistive loading is selectable from 70Ω to 400Ω and capacitive loading from 1000pF to 4300pF via rear-panel dip switches. Input sensitivity can be increased by 6dB to accommodate low-output MC cartridges. An automatic standby function puts the unit to sleep after a period without signal — a practical nod to energy efficiency — though this can be disabled for those who prefer continuous operation.

Connectivity is single-ended RCA in and out, in keeping with Rega’s established design approach. There’s no balanced option, but for most systems this is unlikely to be a deal-breaker. The fully aluminium enclosure provides effective RFI shielding and mechanical rigidity, reinforcing both performance and the brand’s understated industrial aesthetic.

For vinyl listeners seeking greater flexibility and refinement without stepping into full reference territory, the AOS MC appears to be Rega’s attempt to distil the Aura’s core engineering philosophy into a more accessible package.

Within Rega’s phono stage line-up, the AOS MC sits between the Fono MC MK4 and the flagship Aura MC. UK pricing is set at £1,500, with export distribution and regional pricing expected to follow through March and April.
