Pro-Ject Turns the Table with the Debut Reference 10

Handmade in Europe, the Debut Reference 10 represents the culmination of decades of analogue expertise, blending precision engineering with modern design to create what Pro-Ject calls an “unparalleled listening experience.” It’s a statement turntable aimed squarely at serious vinyl enthusiasts — one that redefines what the Debut name stands for.

The new model introduces a host of upgrades, including a 10-inch carbon–aluminium tonearm, diamond-cut aluminium components, an acoustically inert acrylic platter, and height-adjustable damped feet. Together, these refinements bring a level of stability and sonic clarity that pushes the Debut Reference 10 closer to Pro-Ject’s higher-end Xtension and RPM series, while retaining the accessibility that made the Debut range so enduring.

The original Debut turntable, first released in the late 1990s, played a key role in bringing affordable vinyl playback back into mainstream conversation. The new Debut Reference 10 builds on that foundation with more advanced mechanical and electrical engineering. Its hand-finished chassis and hybrid carbon–aluminium tonearm — combining a rigid carbon-fibre outer layer with an aluminium core for better damping — reflects Pro-Ject’s incremental approach to refinement rather than reinvention. The result, according to the company, is higher tracking accuracy, lower distortion, and improved overall clarity.

Both azimuth and vertical tracking angle (VTA) can be adjusted, giving users the flexibility to fine-tune cartridge alignment for optimal playback. The Reference 10 arrives pre-fitted with Pro-Ject’s Pick it PRO Balanced moving-magnet cartridge, designed and built in Europe to complement the turntable’s True Balanced signal architecture. Paired with Pro-Ject’s balanced-compatible phono stages — including the Phono Box S3 B, DS3 B, or Tube Box DS3 B — the system allows for full noise rejection and the cleanest possible signal path.

Speed stability has long been a Pro-Ject hallmark, and the Debut Reference 10 continues that tradition with a new precision electronic speed control system for both 33⅓ and 45rpm playback, with optional 78rpm support. Its DC-driven AC generator produces a clean sine wave to power the motor, while an improved motor suspension isolates vibration from the chassis. The diamond-cut aluminium sub-platter is machined to extremely tight tolerances, increasing mass and rotational precision while reducing wow and flutter. Combined with the acrylic main platter, which can be used without a mat due to its similar impedance to vinyl, the turntable achieves excellent resonance control and speed accuracy.

Underneath, three TPE-damped height-adjustable feet form a stable, low-resonance foundation. Pro-Ject deliberately opts for a three-point system rather than four feet, as it says it offers better stability on uneven surfaces and easier levelling. Power is supplied via an external switch-mode unit, which feeds a precision DC/AC generator built into the turntable. For further refinement, Pro-Ject recommends pairing it with the optional Power Box S3 Phono, which powers both the turntable and a compatible phono preamp while filtering DC noise for cleaner operation.

Visually, the Debut Reference 10 aims to walk the line between minimalism and luxury. The diamond-cut metal components and satin-finished acrylic platter give it a crisp, modern aesthetic, while its eight-layer hand-painted MDF chassis adds warmth and individuality. Every element — from the gold-plated RCA outputs to the supplied Connect it Phono E cable — reflects Pro-Ject’s focus on longevity, craftsmanship and sustainable quality.

The Pro-Ject Debut Reference 10 feels like both a milestone and a mission statement — a reaffirmation of the brand’s belief in the enduring appeal of analogue playback. It’s designed not just to spin records, but to remind listeners why vinyl still matters: the ritual, the tactility, and the sound that remains gloriously, unmistakably alive.

The Reference 10 will be priced at €1,199 in Europe and £999 upon arrival in the UK in March. Pricing and availability for other regions will be confirmed shortly.
