Onkyo's TX-RZ70 AV receiver is one of the brand's first products since it was acquired by Premium Audio Company (PAC) in 2021. Needless to say, this means the new AVR has everything to prove, and it has come out fighting judging by the spec sheet.

Firstly, the TX-RZ70 boasts 11.2 channels, with 140 watts per channel offering you a 7.2.4 layout (11 amplified). Then, there are seven (according to the spec sheet, but I can only see six on the rear panel) HDMI 2.1 in and three HDMI out (two 8K and one 4K), including eARC. With HDMI 2.1, you get 8K (and 4K) resolution and 40GPS speeds alongside full bandwidth functionality for the fastest refresh rates to keep up with the top gaming consoles, such as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Audio comes by way of 32-bit ESS Sabre DACs, promising ultra-low distortion. Additionally, sound can be optimised for your room thanks to Dirac Live Room Correction, which can also be upgraded to include Dirac Live Bass Control and benefit from the power of AI and machine learning to fully optimise low-frequency performance specifically to your environment.

If you want to keep the audio to yourself, aptX Bluetooth is baked in, allowing you to listen in a higher-quality wireless codec via some suitably-equipped headphones.
Naturally, Onkyo has ensured that all the crucial home cinema and audio boxes have been ticked and so features Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced, Neural:X, THX Certified for Theatre Reference Sound and the nice inclusion of Klipsch Optimized Mode to get the very best from Klipsch's Reference Premiere speakers and subwoofers. Auro-3D will be available in June via an optional firmware update.

Furthermore, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast built-in are all present and correct, while Roon Ready certification is lined-up for September, which will be implemented through a firmware update enabling subscribers to access their centralised streaming service. However, the TX-R720 also offers access to TIDAL, Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Deezer and more.

Finally, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple's Siri offer hands-free control.
The Onkyo TX-RZ70 AVR is available from spring, priced at £3,099/ €3299.
