Nothing and KEF Launch Headphone (1) With Transparent Style and Hi-Fi Sound

Blending Nothing’s playful design ethos with KEF’s decades-long acoustic mastery, Headphone (1) is pitched as a fresh rethink of what over-ear listening can be.

It takes something a little inspired to stand apart in an industry awash with lookalike cans and copycat features. Enter Headphone (1), a creation born from the unlikely courtship of London’s fearless tech provocateurs, Nothing, and British audio artisans KEF — and Nothing’s first foray into over-ear headphones.

For those not familiar, this isn’t Nothing’s first step into personal audio. The company made its initial splash in the headphone space with true wireless earbuds, starting back in 2021 and evolving through to the more recent Ear (2), which we reported on here.

Brought to life under the ‘Sound by KEF’ initiative, Headphone (1) marries bold, transparent design with the acoustic expertise only decades of audio obsession can produce. For KEF, it’s another chance to share the beauty of natural, balanced sound with a new generation; for Nothing, it’s a statement that technology can — and should — stir the senses.

KEF's acoustic signature is at the heart of Headphone (1). Co-engineered in Maidstone, these headphones harness a custom-built 40mm dynamic driver, refined with a precision damping system and high-linearity suspension that, the company claims, minimises distortion. It’s a carefully tuned recipe, Nothing and KEF suggest, designed to render every genre with lifelike clarity, whether you’re sinking into Active Noise Cancelling, letting the outside world filter through with Transparency Mode, or exploring a new dimension via on-board Spatial Audio with head tracking. Support for Hi-Res Audio, LDAC, USB-C lossless playback and the humble 3.5mm jack means your favourite source is always welcome.

Nothing’s design language is just as intentional. Those transparent ear cups and sculptural lines aren’t mere theatre — they reveal the care behind each component, wrapping KEF’s acoustic craft in formed aluminium, resilient plastics, and sumptuous PU memory foam. Oil-resistant cushions are said to mould gently to the listener’s head, while the telescopic arms adjust with a smooth, almost poetic motion. The result is a pair of headphones that look striking, feel luxurious, and promise hours of fatigue-free listening.

In this writer’s view, it’s genuinely refreshing to see Nothing and KEF sidestep touch and haptic sensors in favour of good old-fashioned tactile controls—a reminder that sometimes, the simplest solutions are still the most effective. Headphones (1) restore the pleasure of precise, physical command with their roller, paddle, and button. Adjusting volume, skipping tracks, or toggling ANC happens by feel alone, sparing users the often awkward taps and guesswork of modern swipe interfaces.

Underneath this artistry runs serious tech. Dual feedforward and feedback microphones drive an adaptive ANC system that, according to the company, responds in real time to changing environments. At the same time, Transparency Mode is designed to bring the outside world back in with natural ease. Four additional mics, paired with AI trained on more than 28 million noise scenarios, aim to keep calls crisp even on bustling streets.

Battery life is rated at up to 35 hours with ANC engaged — comfortably above the category average, though not quite reaching the marathon claims of some competitors like Sennheiser’s Momentum 4. A quick five-minute top-up is reportedly enough to deliver around 2.4 hours more, ensuring you’re rarely without your soundtrack for long. Bluetooth 5.3, seamless dual device pairing, Fast Pair support and low-latency performance round out a spec sheet built with modern, multi-device lives in mind.

Meanwhile, the Nothing X app offers deeper customisation. An 8-band Advanced EQ invites personal fine-tuning well beyond simple treble and bass tweaks, while programmable Button actions let you call up ChatGPT, jump straight into Channel Hop to cycle through recent audio apps, or even fire off quick reminders and notes using Nothing’s Essential Space — a kind of lightweight memory bank designed to capture fleeting thoughts without breaking your listening flow.

Headphone (1) will be available in black and white finishes, priced at £299 | US$299 | €299 | A$549 (late July for Australian availablity).
