Magico S2 Compact 3-way Floorstanders Launched

Magico launches its new S Series, the compact four-driver S2 floorstanding loudspeaker.
Magico's aim for the S2 loudspeaker was apparently to "create the most compact three-way S Series loudspeaker ever, with a size-to-performance ratio never achieved before", and, according to the company, they achieved just that.

Following the success of the S3, which we experienced at its UK launch, and S5, the S2 builds on the strengths of its larger stablemates while adding "its own design flare and unique capabilities" and promising "unprecedented performance for a speaker that can fit almost anywhere," according to the press release.
The S2 is a three-way, four-driver loudspeaker that Magico says has been engineered to punch way above its 132-pound (60kg) weight and 43.48 x 15.56 x 13.59-inch (110.4 x 39.5 x 34.5cm) [HxWxD] size in all areas of sonic performance. We're told that this is verified by a Polytec Laser Vibrometer and the latest simulated 3D modelling during the design process to ensure potential resonances were addressed.

The result is the S2's compact yet refined cabinet, created entirely from Magico's largest single-piece extrusion yet. The manufacturer boasts that this design minimises diffraction and maximises strength.
Integral to the S2's extruded cabinet is a full-length vertical brace. According to the brand, this yields increased rigidity and stiffness while enabling optimal damping strategies. This, along with Magico's existing S Series enclosure technology, meant the enclosure would not add any of its own colour to your music.

Similarly, the S2's driver technology has also been further developed. Like the S3 and S5 before it, the S2 benefits from the Gen 8 Nano-Tec driver cone, which consists of an aluminium-honeycomb core sandwiched by graphene-reinforced carbon-fibre skins. Magico says this allows lower thickness, lighter weight, and more effective damping, resulting in lower distortion than ever before.
Featuring a 3-inch voice coil with a Gen 8 Nano-Tec cone, the pair of freshly developed 7-inch bass drivers are the first to benefit from a new generation of driver chassis combining stiffness and damping while allowing minimal acoustic contribution by reducing modes and maximising airflow. The third-generation chassis structure promises refinements across mechanical and acoustical parameters, such as much-improved force distribution, a better suspension design, and a dual-post configuration equalising dynamic tensile wire forces. According to published stats, the S2 produces undistorted low frequencies with a maximum SPL of 109dB at 55Hz measured at 1 meter.

The S2's 5-inch midrange driver features a generous 75mm voice coil. This unit has a Gen 8 Nano-Tec cone and is built into a third-generation chassis. The S2's midrange uses a neodymium-based motor system with two extra-large magnets to yield a super-stabilised magnetic field in a 16mm air gap. The high-efficiency midrange sports a full copper cap and a pure titanium voice coil. This also eschews fibreglass tape, which would otherwise create unneeded damping while setting "a new benchmark of measured performance in the frequency and time domains for a driver its size."
Finally, the S2's 28mm tweeter is based on the flagship M9's unit and uses a diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm and neodymium-based motor system. This, says Magico, yields the lowest distortion possible today and impressive power handling, even compared to previous S Series speakers. The S2's upper frequencies—extending to 50kHz—are "detailed yet subtle and reveal highs that are revelatory in information retrieval."

Driver duties are assigned via the S2's three-way Elliptical Symmetry Crossover (ESXO), implemented with an acoustical-target 24dB-slope using a Linkwitz-Riley filter. Meanwhile, maximum frequency and phase linearity are said to be accomplished while keeping intermodulation distortion to vanishing levels. Furthermore, the S2 uses a full complement of state-of-the-art components from Mundorf of Germany, including M-Resist Ultra foil resistors, which deliver greater power handling, increased transparency, and more sonic liquidity than previous components. The new copper foil paper coil improves the noise floor by reducing microphonic effects.

The S2 is available in six Softec choices that promise to be rich in colour depth, smooth to the touch, and very durable. Additionally, six high gloss finishes are expertly polished to a lustrous shine with a clear top coat.
The Magico S2 will ship in Q2 2025, with pricing available closer to that time.
