First teased back in 2019 during the company’s 60th anniversary, the A/550 has since developed a quiet following among enthusiasts, with its prolonged development only adding to the intrigue. Now, with an early-access sign-up page live and official channels starting to speak more openly, the signal is clear, this one is finally on approach.

The A/550 feels like a clear step away from the models that have shaped Koss’s modern identity. Known for budget favourites like the Porta Pro and KSC75, the brand is now pushing into more serious territory with a full-size, open-back design aimed at the mid-tier audiophile market.

What we know so far is deliberately controlled. The A/550 uses a newly developed 54-ohm, 44mm dynamic driver, referred to as RLX44, paired with what we understand to be a multilayer polycarbonate diaphragm, neodymium magnet structure, and a lightweight copper-clad aluminium voice coil. Koss is framing it as a ground-up design rather than an evolution of existing platforms.

The result, we're promised, is an open-back headphone capable of high-fidelity audio across a broad frequency range of 12 Hz to 22,000 Hz with a sensitivity of 92 dB SPL

Meticulously crafted from premium materials including stainless steel, aluminium, ultra-soft velour, and precision-stitched vegan leather, A/550 has been developed, refined, and tested to create a headphone that doesn’t just reproduce audio, but transports listeners directly into the heart of the performance.

The physical design leans into more premium territory. A metal headband is paired with reinforced resin earcups to keep weight under 300 grams, while magnetically attached velour pads in a self-adjusting sling point to a more considered ownership experience, a small detail, but one that aligns with longer-term usability rather than disposability.

Connectivity steps up as well. The A/550 uses dual detachable cables, and it looks like Koss has gone with mini XLR connections — a small detail, but one that nudges it firmly into enthusiast territory and opens the door to balanced setups.

Koss has aimed at sensible pricing, leaving the A/550 walking into a highly competitive segment, typically dominated by models such as the Sennheiser HD 600 and similar mid-tier open-backs. Where Koss may look to differentiate is less about outright spec and more about positioning, combining a new driver platform with the company’s longstanding lifetime warranty, still a rarity at this level.

Koss has avoided the usual press cycle altogether. The A/550 has instead trickled out across forums and social channels, with the company responding in real time. It’s not the fastest way to build a launch, but it’s arguably a more believable one.

A product that’s been in development, and in public discussion, for the better part of six years inevitably carries weight but it’s not without risk. Koss is effectively stepping outside the category that has sustained its relevance in recent decades and into a space where expectations are both higher and less forgiving.

For now, the missing piece is the one that matters most: how it sounds.

With early-access registrations now open and further details expected to follow, the A/550 is shaping up as one of the more closely watched headphone launches of 2026 not because of what Koss has been, but because of what it’s trying to prove next.

Early ordering begins in June 2026, with the Koss A/550 priced at US$349.99.
