KEF Brings THX Performance to the Wall with New Ci-Series In-Wall Speakers

KEF has expanded its Extreme Home Theatre range with two new in-wall speakers designed for installations where visual discretion and uncompromised performance have to coexist.

The Ci3120QLM-THX and Ci5120QLM-THX arrive with full THX certification and several of the brand’s latest engineering updates.
Recent years have seen growth in built-in audio, driven by listeners seeking powerful sound that seamlessly blends into their homes. KEF’s latest additions respond directly to that shift. Both models utilise the company’s 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a combination designed to deliver more even dispersion and a cleaner high-frequency response by absorbing unwanted energy behind the tweeter. It’s a technical approach KEF has rolled out across its premium models, and its inclusion here reflects the company’s focus on raising the capabilities of in-wall designs.

Each speaker is a 3-way system built around 120mm long-throw bass drivers engineered for low distortion in the restricted environment of a wall cavity. The Ci3120QLM-THX utilises two of these drivers and carries THX Select certification for medium-sized rooms. In contrast, the larger Ci5120QLM-THX employs four drivers and achieves THX Ultra status — a specification designed for larger, dedicated theatre spaces. KEF also incorporates a revised decoupling chassis to reduce vibration transfer, along with an updated tweeter damper that limits resonance in the midrange and treble.

The Ci3120QLM-THX is designed for living rooms and mid-sized theatre spaces where aesthetics are a significant consideration. Its slim bezel and paintable magnetic grille allow for a clean installation, while IP64 resistance broadens placement options. Despite its compact footprint, it is engineered to meet the output and distortion targets required for THX Select, offering a measurable benchmark for performance.

The Ci5120QLM-THX takes things up a notch for larger rooms. Its four bass drivers provide greater headroom, and when paired with the 12th-generation Uni-Q and MAT, KEF claims it maintains clarity and control at higher playback levels, where many in-wall speakers begin to lose composure. Like the smaller model, it features an ultra-thin bezel, a magnetic grille, and IP64 protection, while THX Ultra certification identifies its intended role in purpose-built cinema environments.Across both models, KEF aims to deliver controlled, full-range performance from an installation-friendly design without relying on visual presence to signal capability.

The Ci3120QLM-THX and Ci5120QLM-THX are now available and priced at US$1,299.99 | A$2,150 and US$1,699.99 | A$2,800 respectively.
