Hermès Headphones – Leather, Luxury and €11,800

Forget DAC chips and driver materials—when it comes to the latest high-end headphone release, the most talked-about spec is Hunter cowhide.
Yes, luxury fashion giant Hermès has launched a pair of wireless headphones priced at US$15,000 / €11,800 / A$19,000. And while one would be forgiven for thinking this is just another luxury brand sticking leather on someone else's drivers, the truth, amusingly, is a little more nuanced.

These headphones aren’t Hermès’ first audio flirtation. The French house has previously dipped its artisanal toes into jukeboxes, boom boxes, and cubic speakers. But this is its first foray into headphones, and it’s not outsourcing the design as you might expect. Instead, they’re being developed at Ateliers Horizons, the brand’s elite Parisian workshop responsible for some of Hermès’ most coveted creations.

According to Hermès Creative Director, Axel de Beaufort:
“We need to understand the engineering of things. It doesn’t mean that we do the engineering, but we need to understand and we need to be able to push boundaries.”
Specs remain mostly secret — no confirmation yet on codec support, driver type, or DSP trickery — though some suggest the grille design hints at planar magnetic drivers, a more advanced design typically associated with high-end sound reproduction.
We know the headphones support wired and wireless use, offer active noise cancellation, a USB-C port, a 3.5 mm-to-6.5 mm jack adapter for DJ use, and a claimed 30 hours of battery life.

Still, for that price, you could buy nearly 16 pairs of Audio-Technica’s ATH-ADX3000 — a reference-class open-back headphone and StereoNET Applause Award winner in 2024. Lauded for its incredible detail, expansive soundstage, and tonal neutrality, the ADX3000 is a product for listeners chasing musical truth. The Hermès, by contrast, is for those chasing status, with a touch of sound engineering sprinkled in—luxuriously, of course!

At 415 grams, the Hermès headphones aren’t exactly featherweights either, but to be fair they’re not made for long-haul commuting or mixing in the studio. These are meant to be worn like a statement piece — ideally paired with a Birkin, perhaps while listening to Tame Impala through €11,800 worth of French leather — after stepping out of an Aston Martin, because understatement only goes so far.
Ultimately, Hermès isn’t trying to win over Head-Fi forums or dethrone Sennheiser or Meze Audio. These headphones are a flex — pure and simple. And yet, with their hand-finished materials, bespoke tuning, and Parisian provenance, they might be the most exclusive pair of cans on the planet south of a pair of Sennheiser HE 1s.

So are they worth it? Not if you're counting frequency response charts. But if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t ask the price, you probably already have a set on order.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
