Gryphon EOS 5 Loudspeakers Hong Kong Show Premiere
Gryphon Audio Designs unveils its larger EOS 5 loudspeakers in Hong Kong.
Gryphon has taken the wraps off its new EOS 5 3-way loudspeaker at HKAV 2023 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, and StereoNET is there, so check out Rune Skov's video introduction of the new speakers below!
The EOS 5 is said to build upon the technologies pioneered for Gryphon's revolutionary EOS 2 2-way design, with the larger EOS 5 adding "Full Frequency Range performance" (20-40,000 Hz, +2 dB) and "shattering dynamic capability".
Gryphon's EOS 5 boasts four bespoke drivers featuring a 6.5-inch midrange and dual 9.5-inch low-frequency drivers utilising a TPCD (Thin-Ply Carbon Fiber Diaphragm) cone construction and Impulse Optimizer Rings, which were introduced with the EOS 2.
As with EOS 2, the cones are manufactured by one of the world's leading fabricators of Formula 1 components, while a smaller (29mm) Beryllium Dome Tweeter has been purpose-engineered for EOS 5's higher crossover point.
We are told the EOS 5 has been purposely engineered to present an easy amplifier load at 90 dB sensitivity and 4 ohms nominal, 2.9 ohm minimum impedance.
The EOS 5 shares the faceted, jewel-like enclosure aesthetic created for its smaller sibling. Meanwhile, the Line-Dampened porting system promises a unique solution to smoothing airflow in this wider-bandwidth loudspeaker.
Additionally, the EOS 5 benefits from a three-position Tweeter Level Switch offering 0dB, +2dB or +3dB boost to optimise off-axis dispersion making integration to your listening space even more effortless.
Gryphon's custom-manufactured adjustable spikes are equipped with removable, integrated dampers to provide the most stable speaker positioning on flooring, either with or without carpeting.
The EOS 5 shares the Soul Red Crystal, High Gloss Black and Stealth Grey colour options of the EOS 2 and a new S-Mat Black, dubbed "a next-generation, matte black paint". Gryphon boasts that this is the first time S-Mat Black has been used in loudspeaker manufacturing and features a "Self Healing" chemistry.
The brand says that if small scratches appear on the finish, the paint can be repaired with the help of a piece of parchment baking paper and an iron used at low heat. This application, we're assured, encourages the paint to re-flow and regain its normal, unblemished surface. Perfect for those with children, pets or clumsy friends.
The new EOS 5 will be available in early 2024 with a US MSRP of $49,800.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
