
When we first reported on the EC 5 at High End Munich 2025, the Norwegian brand described it as ten years in the making. With AXPONA kicking off this Friday (April 10–12) in Schaumburg, Illinois, the new preamp is about to face one of hi-fi’s more demanding audiences and, if early feedback is any guide, expectations are already high.
Ahead of the show, Electrocompaniet Sales & Marketing Director Lasse Danielsen spoke with StereoNET Asia Editor Eugene Ng, while a New York dealer already running the unit didn’t mince words:
It's the best-performing preamp I've ever spent time with. It replaced the 4.8 in our system, with no other changes, and the improvement was jaw-dropping. We are now often distracted by how excellent the system sounds. We just pause whatever we are doing and stand there, mesmerised.
Perhaps more telling was the dealer’s demonstration approach:
I say, 'Are you ready for this?' …and I turn the volume way down. The ability of this preamp to maintain dynamics, imaging, and fine resolution at low volumes is really impressive. And then when you again turn the volume up, slowly, you realise that there's absolutely no change to the character of the sound… it just gets louder. This is so rare!
Dealer feedback should be taken with a grain of salt, but the emphasis on low-level performance is interesting. That points to a design trying to preserve microdynamics and tonal balance, something even high-end systems can struggle with when listening quietly.
The EC 5 itself looks to be a serious piece of engineering. At its centre is a proprietary volume control system developed over a decade, with no mechanical switches or relays in the signal path. Instead, it uses a network of parallel resistors controlled by in-house electronic switching, keeping the signal path consistent regardless of volume.
According to Electrocompaniet, this approach minimises noise and distortion introduced by the volume stage, while offering 1,000 steps of adjustment in 0.1dB increments. The same relay-free philosophy extends to input selection.

The circuit topology is fully discrete and dual-mono, operating in pure Class A from input to output. Each channel has its own independent power supply, centred around an 80VA toroidal transformer with 15,000μF of storage capacitance per channel, supported by multi-stage filtering and regulation.
Electrocompaniet’s AmpliWire topology is used in the gain stage, characterised by high open-loop bandwidth, low negative feedback, and no capacitors in the signal path. The output stage is specified to drive loads up to 600 ohms and support long cable runs.

On the specs alone, Electrocompaniet isn’t holding back. You’re looking at a frequency response from 0.5Hz to 450kHz, THD+N of 0.0002%, a 113dB signal-to-noise ratio, and channel separation north of 120dB, with output impedance at 22 ohms. Specs never tell the full story, but they go some way to explaining those early impressions.
Visually, the EC 5 retains Electrocompaniet’s signature acrylic fascia, now paired with a large ball-bearing volume control wheel and a 7-inch IPS colour display. Internally, the chassis is divided into shielded compartments, separating analogue circuitry from power supply and control electronics.

Around the back, there’s plenty going on. You get four balanced and two single-ended inputs per channel, along with two balanced and one single-ended outputs, plus dedicated tape/record outputs. Integration is handled with three 12V triggers, an IR output, and Ethernet for app control and firmware updates.
The EC 5 is designed to serve as the control centre for Electrocompaniet’s AW300M and AW800M monoblock power amplifiers and, at 36kg, is clearly built to reference standards in every sense.

AXPONA 2026 runs from April 10–12 at the Schaumburg Convention Centre in Illinois. Pricing has not yet been confirmed across all markets, we’ll update as details come through.
