Dirac Delivers Immersive Concert Hall Acoustics to NIO’s New ES8

Swedish digital audio pioneer Dirac has teamed up with EV innovator NIO to debut venue-based immersive sound in the third-generation ES8 SUV, which was unveiled at NIO Day 2025 in China.

Dirac’s latest “reference room mode” and “Dirac Dimensions” technologies promise to transform the ES8 into a rolling concert hall, with acoustics modelled directly on iconic studios and performance spaces.
Rather than relying on generic reverberation effects, Dirac has captured real acoustic measurements from world-renowned venues and mapped them for playback through the ES8’s speaker array. According to the company, the result is a sound field that mirrors the reverberation and directional qualities of the original room.

NIO offers three selectable “venue rooms”: Legendary Studio (small), Pinnacle Stage (medium), and Golden Hall (large). Each mode provides a distinct acoustic character, allowing passengers to choose between intimacy, scale, or grandeur.
As Hendrik Hermann, Dirac’s Vice President of Automotive, explained, the partnership is about recreating environments rather than simply amplifying sound:
Delivering a truly immersive sound experience in a car requires more than powerful speakers. This collaboration with NIO brings the unique acoustic signature of world-class spaces into the ES8, providing passengers with an authentic and emotionally engaging sound experience.

The ES8 also debuts Dirac Dimensions, a spatial upmixer that converts stereo content into a multichannel experience. Using Dirac’s proprietary MIMO impulse response correction, the system ensures every speaker contributes intelligently to a coherent soundstage, producing enveloping audio regardless of seating position. This extends NIO’s existing adoption of Dirac Pro and Dirac Dimensions Infinity, signalling a deeper integration of software-defined audio as a form of luxury.

Launched in 2018 as the company’s first production model, the ES8 has become NIO’s technology showcase. With the third-generation model, the brand is also using audio as a differentiator in its global expansion.
Earlier this year, NIO confirmed plans to enter Singapore, Uzbekistan, and Costa Rica between 2025 and 2026 through distribution partnerships. In Singapore, the brand will work with Wearnes Automotive, while in Costa Rica, it will collaborate with Horizontes Cielo Azul Movilidad. Abu Sahiy Motors will serve Uzbekistan. These moves will also mark NIO’s first right-hand-drive model — the upcoming Firefly — and the brand’s debut in the Americas.

NIO's expansion strategy hinges on trusted local partners, and Head of Global Business Development Chris Chen emphasised the importance of alignment:
To accelerate our entry into diverse global markets, NIO is partnering with experienced players with deep local expertise and extensive distributor networks. Through shared vision and mutual commitment to high standards, we aim to deliver experiences tailored to local users.
The Dirac collaboration underscores NIO’s positioning of software as a form of luxury. By turning real-world acoustic environments into selectable sound profiles, the ES8 offers something even high-end home systems struggle to achieve — lifelike, venue-based immersion in a mobile setting. With NIO’s international rollout gathering momentum, it’s clear the company is betting on audio innovation as a key differentiator in the increasingly crowded premium EV space.

The third-generation ES8 is available now in China, with international rollout tied to NIO’s phased market entry across Asia, Central Asia, and the Americas from 2025 through 2026. Pricing will vary by market and model configuration.
