Carry-On Tunes and Checked-In Quality with Pro-Ject’s Travel Set

Seen at Munich High End 2025, the new compact Travel Set from Pro-Ject offers a compelling alternative to Bluetooth speakers for music lovers on the move.

Travelling music lovers know the compromise all too well: convenience versus sound quality. While Bluetooth speakers offer portability, they rarely deliver the fidelity that audiophiles crave. Enter Pro-Ject Audio Systems, who may have just solved that problem with their newly unveiled Travel Set — a compact, true-stereo hi-fi system designed for life on the road.

We saw the Travel Set firsthand at the recent High End Munich 2025 show, where it turned heads for offering a full-featured audiophile solution in a surprisingly portable form. Packed neatly into a sturdy flight case, the system includes the Stereo Box S3 BT amplifier, Speaker Box 3 E Carbon loudspeakers, high-quality copper speaker cables, six Pro-Ject "Damp It" isolation feet, and even a modern remote control.

Pro-Ject’s new setup stands apart by offering true two-channel stereo — not a mono or phase-hacked pseudo-stereo experience like many Bluetooth options — while still remaining compact enough to take on your travels. For those in our StereoNET forums who often debate the best-sounding travel setup, this might just be the new benchmark.

At the heart of the system is the Stereo Box S3 BT, an ultra-compact integrated amplifier with 2 x 40W output at 4 ohms, dual RCA line inputs, and Bluetooth AptX HD capability. It’s built into a solid aluminium enclosure to resist interference and includes a variable 3.5mm output for connecting to a subwoofer or secondary amp.

Complementing the amp are the Speaker Box 3 E Carbon loudspeakers. Despite their desktop-friendly footprint, these speakers pack a punch, boasting a flat frequency response from 83Hz to 20kHz, tight bass via rear-firing ports, and a clear, detailed soundstage. Pro-Ject credits this to the use of a cutting-edge carbon-fibre composite woofer and a thoughtfully voiced tweeter — producing what they call an “open sounding” character that never veers into harshness.

While it won’t fit in your carry-on quite like a UE Boom or Sonos Roam, Pro-Ject claims their Travel Set offers something else entirely: real stereo separation, greater dynamic range, and a setup that’s actually enjoyable for critical listening. Whether for a holiday house, long-term work stay, or an audiophile’s road trip kit, this could well be one of the most refined travel-ready systems on the market.

Interestingly, the topic of what makes the best-sounding portable music system is one that’s often discussed in our StereoNET community forums — where members debate everything from compact DAC/amp combos to premium Bluetooth speakers. With the release of Pro-Ject’s Travel Set, there’s now another serious contender worth considering in those conversations.

Available in satin black, white, or walnut veneer, the Travel Set also includes magnetic speaker grilles and all necessary cabling to get going straight out of the box. The Pro-Ject Travel Set is available from €699 (Black & White) or €750 (Walnut) from authorised Pro-Ject retailers. Pricing and availability for some regions have not yet been confirmed.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
