Designed for the demands of real-world living spaces, this 4K HDR projector combines convenience with versatility, though it remains to be tested for real-world performance.

Designed for spaces with vibrant wall colours or bright lighting conditions,"the GP520 claims to go beyond traditional projectors by featuring innovative adaptive technology, allowing it to adjust to ambient light and even compensate for non-white wall colours, including "six most popular colours". That's not in the specs but a quick check on a few decorating sites suggests that might include Warm Neutrals, Earthy Greens, Soft Pinks, Moody Blues, Sunset Hues and Soft Pastels!

According to BenQ, this innovation ensures vivid images regardless of the surface, making it ideal for those without a dedicated, projector-optimised room. It offers HDR brightness rated at 2,600 ANSI lumens, providing solid performance during daytime viewing and enhanced HDR capabilities at night. While the projector supports the HDR10+ standard, it does not include Dolby Vision—a notable limitation at this price point.

The GP520 delivers full 4K resolution through DLP technology and includes Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) for smoother visuals, particularly in fast-moving scenes. Its Rec.709 colour gamut coverage reaches an impressive 98%, though its DCI-P3 coverage of 81% suggests it is more suited to standard viewing rather than cinema-grade colour accuracy.

Making life easier, BenQ has packed the GP520 with handy image alignment tools, including automatic keystone correction, perspective tweaks, and orientation fixes. You know, like that partner who always seems to be able to get the picture straight, whether you're projecting onto a wall, ceiling, or even that slightly crooked DIY screen you swore you'd fix.

On the smart side, Google TV integration turns the GP520 into your all-in-one entertainment sidekick. With access to major streaming platforms, it’s ready to bring your favourite shows and movies to life—no extra gadgets required (unless you really enjoy juggling remotes). For gamers, the two HDMI 2.1 inputs with Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) provide compatibility with modern consoles like the PlayStation 5. However, its suitability for competitive gaming still needs to be evaluated.

The GP520’s built-in 2 x 12-watt stereo speakers offer a solid start for audio, but let’s be honest—you’ll probably want to bring in something more substantial. Thankfully, HDMI eARC makes it easy to connect to your favourite external sound system for that full-throttle, room-shaking experience.

The GP520 specs suggest decent LED lamp longevity, boasting up to 30,000 hours in the ECO model (up to 20,000 hours in NORMAL Mode. The included stand will allow for multiple placement options, even allowing users to project upwards onto a ceiling (that could be handy if you don't have any free wall space or want to watch while lying in bed?) or mount it for more traditional setups. Overall, the specs suggest BenQ's latest offering combines features typically seen in higher-end models with a price point accessible to a much wider audience.

While its specifications suggest the GP520 could meet the needs of casual home theatre users, the absence of Dolby Vision and its relatively modest DCI-P3 coverage may give some pause for cinephiles seeking the most vibrant and precise visuals. That adaptability, smart features, and wallet-friendly price make it a solid choice for anyone looking to level up their home entertainment without spending a small fortune.

The BenQ GP520 is available now and priced at A$2,199 AUD / US$1,499  / £1,199
