Austrian Audio Hi-X20 Closed-Back Headphones Now Available

The Hi-X20 offers a fresh take on Austrian Audio's signature sound.

We have sampled Austrian Audio's open-backed offerings, from the Hi-X65 to the flagship The Composer, and found them eminently capable. However, given the ex-AKG core of its team, this shouldn't be a surprise.

The Viennese company is back with an affordable closed-back set touted as a more refined version of its sub-£100 Hi-X15.

The Hi-X20 is loaded with the same 44mm driver, ring-magnet system, and copper-clad aluminium voice coil as the Hi-X15. However, the new design improves airflow and reduces the weight of the membrane and voice coil connected to it. This, we are told, means the drivers in the Hi-X20 can change direction faster and offer more responsive, precise audio.

Although the new headphones use the same driver technology as their older and cheaper sibling, Austrian Audio says it has taken steps to adjust the Hi-X20's tuning based on user feedback.

Austrian Audio CEO Martin Seidl told StereoNET:

The development of Hi-X20 was very much a collaborative effort with our customers, who offered us thoughtful feedback. The result is a different tuning and a fresh look that will appeal perfectly to audio professionals and musicians.

The end result is headphones that deliver an improved "pristine sound, honest frequency response (12Hz-24kHz), fast transients, and minimal distortion in the bass range."

The Hi-X20 is designed to survive the rigours of studio life. It features a foldable design with metal hinges and low-retention, detachable foam memory pads. It also comes bundled with a detachable 3m cable and a 3.5mm to 6.3mm adapter.

The Austrian Audio Hi-X20 headphones are set to retail for £120.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
