Audio-Technica’s Hotaru Levitates Analog Listening to New Heights

Audio-Technica’s Hotaru turntable, revealed at Milan Design Week 2025, combines magnetic levitation, responsive lighting, and refined analog playback to deliver a visually striking, multi-sensory vinyl experience.

Limited to just 1,000 units worldwide, the Hotaru—meaning firefly in Japanese—aims to reimagine vinyl playback as a multisensory experience where sound and light converge harmoniously.
At the heart of Hotaru’s design is an innovative floating structure powered by magnetic repulsion. The platter levitates above the main unit, effectively isolating the stylus and tonearm from external vibrations to deliver greater sonic clarity. Beyond the engineering, the hovering effect creates a striking visual presence that creates the illusion of music suspended above the system.

But the Hotaru’s appeal doesn’t stop there. A responsive lighting system, offering a palette of 20 colours, synchronises with the music in real-time. Listeners can choose between three distinct modes: Basic Mode for a steady glow, Gradation Mode for smooth transitions between hues, and Link Mode, where the lighting pulses to match the character of the music. The result is a vivid interplay of light and sound that turns every listening session into an ambient event that invites deeper immersion in music and space.
Built with a minimalist carbon tonearm and a specially specified VM stereo cartridge, the Hotaru remains focused on audio fidelity. A DC servo motor drives its belt mechanism, supporting 33⅓ and 45 RPM playback, while the built-in speaker array—comprising dual 63.5mm full-range drivers and 19mm tweeters—delivers a frequency response of 60Hz to 20kHz.

The Hotaru’s chassis combines aluminium and acrylic—materials selected for their durability and contribution to acoustic performance—and rests on solid brass feet for enhanced resonance control. Weighing 12kg and measuring 430mm x 430mm x 235mm, it confidently occupies space as both an audio centrepiece and a conversation-starting design object.
Inspired by Japan’s appreciation for fleeting beauty, the Hotaru is named after the firefly—a symbol of transience and wonder. Audio-Technica describes it as an invitation to embrace each listening moment, just as one might pause to appreciate the quiet beauty of a firefly in motion.

With only 1,000 units available globally, the Hotaru has the potential to become a coveted centrepiece for collectors and design-conscious audiophiles alike. Preorders for the Audio-Technica Hotaru, priced at US$9,999 (excluding VAT), are open now and will close on May 30, 2025. Orders will be processed in August, and deliveries will begin in October.
