The new earphones are aimed at listeners who want active noise cancellation without the charging, latency and battery-life compromises that come with Bluetooth models. The wired USB-C connection also makes them a practical fit for newer smartphones, tablets, laptops and portable gaming devices that have abandoned the traditional 3.5mm headphone socket.

Audio-Technica says the ATH-CKD7NC uses high-efficiency 11mm drivers designed for high-resolution playback, with the company claiming precise diaphragm control, clear separation across the audio spectrum and full-bodied bass from the compact earpiece design.

The noise-cancelling system uses dual microphones built into each earpiece to detect surrounding noise and generate anti-phase signals to reduce it. As always with products in this category, the real test will be how well that works across everyday conditions such as commuting, office noise and aircraft cabin rumble, but the specification is notable for a cabled in-ear model at this end of the market.

The ATH-CKD7NC also includes Environmental Noise Cancellation microphones for voice calls, with Audio-Technica saying the system filters background noise so the user’s voice comes through more clearly. A hear-through mode is also available for situations where listeners need to stay aware of their surroundings.

Compatibility extends to PCs and Macs with USB-C ports, Android devices and iPhone 15 and later models without requiring an adapter. Audio-Technica also says compatibility has been confirmed with the Nintendo Switch 2 and other gaming consoles, although certain functions may not be supported depending on the device.

An in-line controller with microphone handles noise-cancelling and hear-through mode, along with music playback, track skipping and volume adjustment. The direct wired connection should also appeal to users who want predictable plug-and-play operation without pairing or charging another device.

The Audio-Technica ATH-CKD7NC wired USB-C noise-cancelling in-ear headphones are available now priced at A$119 through major retailers and the Audio-Technica direct. Pricing for other regions is yet to be confirmed.
