If you have headphones is this imbalance the same?

Also listen in car or rip to iTunes and see if it's similar on digital playback

Let doggie try. I should "infect" some of his discs and he go and do some ripping.

My new laptop has a problem running the soundforge software usually used for ripping I dunno why.

But some people have said they "treated" their CDs and the differences can be heard on the ripped files.

I just got a SID from NDV and will see if I can hear/see differences in playback of cd, sacd, DVD-a etc

It is supposed to stop refractions of the laser through the disc or something like that...I hear some difference when I played it with and without on a cd, but need a quited and familiar pice to really get my head around it.

Maybe it could help here?

What? I still have 7 or 8 new copies of SID.....

Last time I buy to give away to students.  ;D

On the 2nd groovenote sacd sampler, I gave strict instructions for the factory to coat a layer of green colour first before laying on the artwork. Could never compare the difference, so dunno if it helps or not.

Maybe will become my fave drink coaster or maybe not...who knows but a few friends have very good ears for this sort of think so will be fun to do a blind test and see if any of them detect anything different..better or worse is another matter all together

Looks like you're freely offering your infecting services for free to everyone :)

Yah, "infect" and don't give antidote. Quite fun, right?  ;D

Incidentally, I seem to have ran it to this too...and that too noticed when playing some used CDs. Thanks to this thread, could spot it immediately.

Was spinning GM/Faith, which was bought off eBay recently.....it seemed all well when playing this CD, except that the first track sounded extremely bright when played first(then later came back to the first track again and it sounded ok ).....then followed another used CD SV/Solitude Standing....on the first track, the acapella, i noticed the singer has moved to the left (at about 1/4th the distance between the speakers) ...it was same on the 2nd track. Then for a reference, popped in NJ/'Come away with me' SACD (bought new) and it had the same issue as well. Now played the NJ CD on the other CD player and it was playing just fine there...this confirmed the issue. I could not do any more listening that day and powered off the CDP. The next day, i turned on CDP after work and everything back to normal....tried playing multiple CDs between both CDPs and all is well....the singer is now dead center/little to the right.

Now not sure if the problem could have been worse if did not notice and played for longer this way...but did not have the whatever needed to play those CDs again :). Tried listening to both CDs (GM & SV) on macbook with phones.....also tried ripping...no problems with imaging whatsoever...makes me wonder if it really are those CDs which caused this issue...or those  just happened to be the 99th blow which broke the ice. Also i've lots of CDs which bought used (played atleast 6 of them in the last couple of weeks) and none of them showed this problem. Also played other used CDs earlier today and no problems at all.

Thanks melmeow for starting the thread...and JTL...you the man!! :)

Hahaa at least IRS shifted bk to centre. My for that disc the vocal still shifted left. Some song from another disc don't have that problem. So I think it is the recording that is bad for that disc.

I see.. in that case, your system never had a problem....Mine was very obvious...one CDP imaging totally different from the other.

Oh I dun have 2 CDP to compare. But the same track song I got couple in different compilation thats why can compare.

Agree wiz...was thinking....the logical explanation could be along those lines....environmental (static, magnetic, humidity related or even weight balance of the CD itself), or some of these or other causing excessive heat like you mentioned. However, don't recall noticing anything particular

BTW, also remember reading somewhere, the proper method of cleaning a CD has to be in a one-way motion from center to the outside. Not sure if its relevant here.

wonder if these variances could be heat related...transport or CD as the disk will also heat up with playing

Yes, you are partly right. The 2nd time you play the same track (using exact same track cueing methods), the sound will be changed.

Webby experienced that when I played depeche mode sacd for him.

And also, I was playing a particular disc, the same track, and at about the eighth time, I notice the centre image started to shift towards the left side.

Heat does change the sound, and can also create imaging shift problems.

But I have also learnt to, or can instantly "infect" a disc to make the image shift severely off centered.

It's how you "dry" the disc after cleaning that created the problem.

So that why I caution people when they buy used CDs.

Because the seller might have tried to clean the disc before putting them out for sale....

When I buy used CDs from eBay, I always give instructions to the seller not to clean the disc in any way, in case they haven't clean it already. I tell them especially not to clean with water, because, they bound to use something to dry the disc.

Like many things in daily life, once you understand how the problem is created, then you can figure out how to treat it.

Sometimes I also hoping that there is a glossary for soundstage definition..like depth, wide, height, dark, bright, etc...think a lot of us are always talking/experiencing same issues but using different terminlogy.

There is, Stereophile Audio Glossary

To be sure..use a sound meter. Play with left speaker only and record DB. Do the same with the right. See technically got diff or not. Or ear prob.
