Audio Forum in XP / Singapore

Featured Replies

Just curious about this, and always wondering how the community feels about the level of topic and discussion here  ;)

Edit: title a bit misleading... Amended 'highend' to 'audio'

What is the benchmark or reference.

We are a tiny island, this is as good as it'll get.

The question and the subject is not tally. I should said this is a Mix end Stereo forum where people talk from high to normal. All are music lover and require some good, value for money audio playback equipment not necessary to be high end.

Think there are different tiers in the depth of different forums. E.g. Audio asylum and audiogon forums are mostly for highend and serious audiophiles. It's also quite natural that once an audiophile progressed into mid / high end territories, he/she would want to spend more time exploring and discussing at the right level.

Day 1... almost 50% of those who vote think quality of discussion here at XP is poor here, and prefer the knowledge level at the echloft (now defunct). Anyway, numbers are too low to be representative.

Having grown through the years with Echoloft. I will definitely support Echoloft, which when alive was solely on Hifi with higher level focus of discussion

Well, with it gone, no choice but to seek refuge here...

Oh great. More snob appeal.

Ultimately this hobby should be about the love of music rather than how much or how high end your gear is. ps In case your wife/girlfriend/mistress never told you, the size of the bonnet of your convertible car or the total budget for your hifi system does not really compensate for a the lack of size in the trousers department.

I expect no one else could be bothered to vote hence your voting results.

If echoloft is really what you want, please by all means, go and start that site somewhere else.

It might be great to have less flaming, for a change.

FWIW, I find it's nice to have a gradual scale in budget discussions. Rome wasn't built in one day, and even with a modest Marantz/Wharfedale setup, you can start enjoying the music from day one. You don't need a Wilson with Class A tube monoblocks that might induce a hernia when you carry them to start enjoy music.

I used to hate going to Adelphi because of such a snob mindset. I'm glad to have friends like francis and Sanjay who have shown that actually it was the customers and not the stores that have this problem and have actually found kindred spirits who while they own the stores are also just as geeky and as passionate about this hobby as we are, and more often than not, recommend a lower priced alternative because it matches the customer's systems more.

Is that what you think Echoloft is all about, flaming ?

I can see the same 2 big flamers still here... meatballz aka WongFeihong, Big Bad Wolf (a new moniker for somebody familiar)....what are you going to do about it ?

:P

I would be happy for all troublemakers to go :D

I don't discriminate. :D

I hope Everyone would be nicer to each other fellow forumer, so less of flaming in XP so everyone can learn, share and participate more. This is my Chinese New Year wish  :)

Yes no flaming please...

Think could it be the structure of a forum that would lead to the level of participation and type of community it invites?

We all know as one gets into the audio foray, it's not a big audio topic but many elements of it. Namely; source, amps, speakers, cables, power supply, analogue, supports, tweaks, room acoustics, etc. and now also high rez and media interface. Audio asylum, for example, is structured this way to maintain focus and high participation level. Some forums also have interesting sections like show coverage, review section, etc. to be comprehensive.

Thus, will all topics on all aspects and on all levels lumped into one single section be a limitation for an audio forum to progress in participation?

ps here are some tips on how to start your own forum.

Why this suggestion? There are already quite some data base here. It can also be an option to restructure the audio forum here. Just that there got to be majority support, moderator's conscent, and the resources to implement.

Just curious about this, and always wondering how the community feels about the level of topic and discussion here  ;)

Hmm perhaps this changes the vote a bit for the early voters then?

Oh is EL down again?

Isn't the activity a little slow for separate forums for everything?

Sorry if I misinterpreted the purpose of the survey:

Poll

Question: Do you think there is good local forum for hifi (stereo) discussion ?

Strong Yes, high quality discussion here at XP

Ok here, but prefer the depth and knowledge level at previous echoloft

Poor quality here, strong preference for prior echoloft forum

Strongly feel there should be a focus forum for serious audiophile

3 out of 4 choices cast aspersions on the quality of discussions here in favor of EL or about creating a separate forum for "serious audiophiles". I think my suggested links are perfectly in line.

May not have phrased it correctly, but option 4 can also mean restructuring existing XP audio planet to have more sub sections to meet various diversed topical needs.

Very pertinent points...

Audio apartheid, segregration is not what XP is about.

People here tend to deal with information sharing, and less about flaming. Are there flaming issues and snide remarks ? Yes, but in general the forum is peaceful and a pleasure to read and join.

I agree, all mentioned and those whose intentions are obvious and filled with malice, the small be-spectacle and bigoted cowards who hide behind their keyboards and post unpleasantries will know who they are...

I hope there are more like wizardofoz, Francis Wu, Austrich, synthesis, DH, armoury and other very helpful members. Always willing to help, members new and old. If you feel a need to start another forum, sure, feel free.

Feel wronged? Come forward and be identified, join us in our get-togethers, shootouts, coffee or wine sessions and iron out any differences. Don't hide behind your keyboard and flame or pass snide remarks.

I am definitely keen to pitch in and start the forum. :)

Webhosting, software all here. Currently running 2 active forums (500,000 monthly pageviews) and some other websites (www.wikichichi.com).

Actually... jus thinking aloud, we can also do like some other formats, like hifi wikipedia or info sites or hifi pricing/ marketplace or even mobile apps. But the success all depends on user participation and contribution.

My thought is that echoloft did not enforce strong moderation and sank with the flamers. From experience, the forum/ discussion culture can be managed with thoughtful moderation.

We adopt a loosely moderated method in this forum. Therefore, the quality and knowledge level of the discussion is never from us. It is from you as the user that involve in the contribution of the information.

One of my main target is to attract as many newbies as possible into the audio video community so it will keep the community going. It is never cater for only a few handful of highend expert that talks about stuff that most of us don't understand. If no one understand, then ppl will not participate in discussion.

Hope this will bring some AV god back down to earth and start talking in earth language  ;D . (Not targetting at anyone. Just that sometime i find some discussion too chim)

If we have too many sub forum, some sub forum will start to become ghost town. It will be bored to come back here if there is no discussion going on. This will turn some sub forum into some "small circle" for a certain groups of ppl to small talk among them. In long run, this is not healthy.

Maybe for ppl like to stick within a small group, can opt for facebook instead.

While not trying to offend the bros here, I think I know what Leno is driving at.

Although there are keen audiophiles here, the hard-core ones are in the minority. XP has always been a site consisting more of HT enthusiasts mainly and I suppose that many people still see it more as that really.

I can understand that having a separate forum or website for the more atas hifi aficionados might seem segragist, but I've always thought that the few 'dedicated to hifi' punters from Echoloft who migrated over haven't really settled well here. And the large majority of them are not posting on local forums which is a shame as this community is small enough already. I have had this feedback from a number of people who just feel that a forum with posts which are still concerned with 'is there a difference with cables' for example is not conducive to higher discussion- for wrong or right reasons.

If it took the branding of a 'dedicated' forum or separate website to revive the hifi scene again that would be great (minus the insults/ flamings/ etc).

Its true that a (relative) newbie like me would have little to contribute to a 'hi-end' discussion, but I used to just like to read the ramblings over at Echoloft and to ask the occasional question which was generally very well received and answered by the members there.

Nicely put. :) I'm even more starved for info on PC for audio as it seems I'm the only one playing. It's a pity but some of the more experienced players seem to have stopped posting.

When we keep touching on the same basic topics like isolation and cables, sometimes feel like we are turning into a automated FAQ for often repeated subjects.

To me, it has nothing to do with discussion of high end equipment. Even discussion of the simplest things or budget equipment can be done at a high level, which I generally find lacking here in comparison to EL.

Although there are some very knowledgeable old birds that have moved from EL to XP, by and large, a lot of them have vanished or gone on to other forums. Really miss the deep discussions that used to go on there.
