bigred1624705847 Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 well, i actually brought the 800series that night. if you brought your, that would increase the odds more ;D ;D Cestavie: got a question for you.... just wanna know if the piano black portion of your 800V series speakers, are diff to maintain? does it get scratches, swirl marks, patches, or water marks easily? cause the one i saw at the show room had pretty big water marks looking patches... :o :o :o not sure if you can clean and polish off... might have to use car polish and wax for it.... carnuba wax? heehhehehe... ;D pls let me know if you got the same or similar problem?
petetherock Posted January 21, 2007 Author Posted January 21, 2007 Hi ks thanks I did try the Epos M22, wasn't impressed I had a friend with the Quads, it was ok, but I may try it too. There is a whole parallel thread on Jm by bigred. Totem Arros cost 2k But bearing in mind my HT / Music aims, I am keeping to brands I know work well for both ;) Although Spendor is something I may audition on the spare day. Come along and tell me your opinions if you have time. I dunno how much are the totem and JMLab, but did u try Vienna Acoustics, Quad, Spendor, Epos? For VA, the cheapest floorstander wud be Bach. For Spendor, the cheapest floorstanders wud be the S6e? For Quad, the 22L For Epos, M15.2 or M22 I wud guess most of these r in the region of 2k.

I see if i can join, for the fun of it :)
Darthfunk Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I would have bought the Cobalts 816 when i was doing my speakers auditions too bad they didnt had any more stock in black, price wise was a bargain at $2.2k

Saw some circular mark too on my speaker, will try and see if they are easy to remove later this week. All things collect dust, polish surface enchance it ;D Carnuba wax... hmmm they smell nice too ;)
petetherock Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 I got a reply from MA direct about my MA dilema to share with you all: "The GSLCR will work quite well for your front stage and will give up only a little imaging compared to the GS10 but will likely have a little more impact for theater use. The GS10 and GSLCR would be an ideal collective for use in 2 channel and as a theater compliment for a medium to small room. The RS6 and RSLCR although not quite as musical and quick as the GS series make for an excellent compliment for Medium to large sized rooms. They area very competent speaker system but perhaps lack a little of the overall refinement that the GS offers."

petetherock Posted January 27, 2007 Author Posted January 27, 2007 Thanks to some nasty poison by bros here - ;) I did an early recce today after flying in. I went to Electrades and auditioned the Spendors The older S3, S8 was on sale at 900 (new) and (2200 demo). They had a special tone, very neutral, a nice ambience and excellant imaging and it was very stable with good definition. I then switched over to the S6E, the current series. The pace was good, tight and extremely tight. The soundstage was broad, slight behind the speakers and it was easy to pick out the individual instruments. But you pay $3440... Bass was rhythymic, tight and they go down to 35Hz or so. They were defintely tigher than the older series. They are a good match for most amps, being spot on neutral and very imformative. They are also reasonably forgiving as well, with pop, as well as those so called audiophile recordings. If you have the budget, they are very sweet.
petetherock Posted January 27, 2007 Author Posted January 27, 2007 Also listened to totems and focus audio today: http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=tell&action=display&num=1169482296&start=0
petetherock Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 Hi friends for those coming along today, I will be there 1pm or so at Monitor Audio, then JM Lab then Spendor last or KEC depends. Look for this fella huffing and puffing with a 30kg amp Cheers P
ming1881 Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 We had a great time listening to all the various systems (MA, Epos, Quad, B&W, KEF & Spendor) this afternoon and finished quite late at around 8pm. Great services from all the shops to accomodate our requests. For us the highlight was definitely the Spendor S6 speaker at the end of the day after a long days of music listening. Many thanks for Pete for draging along his monster Marantz SR 12S1 and demo discs. Also ks for listening ear & advice. It was sure an ear opener listening using the same amp at various shops.
petetherock Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 We heard Epos, MAs, B/W, Jm Labs, MA and Spendor (S6e, not S6 though) I wrote some short notes here: http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=tell&action=display&num=1169482296&start=0
petetherock Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 Additonal notes on review equipment: DV 9600 by Marantz: An exquisite DVD player, transport or CD source. Well built and the sound is decent, forgiving of poorer sources but detailed enough to use as a 1 to 1.5k Cd player. Operation is a little slow, as with most DVD players but otherwise pretty alright. VFM not so great at 2k plus.
petetherock Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 Many bros are trying to combine music and HT, but are concerned about budget. Over the course of a few weeks, some of the bros here and I auditioned some equipment and I managed to show them that you get what you pay for. Sound obvious? Not always, as some try to combine a budget AV amp - less than 2k and try to achieve musical quality equal to a stereo amp costing 800-1k. I hate to pour cold water on this, but, we need to choose one or the other. It becomes a compromise and we need to know which matters more.. A HT speaker may not sound good with music. But a muscial speaker usually sound good with HT. Some speakers are harder to drive and need decent amps to drive them. Its not the stated watts, but look under the hood, and see where the money goes to. Many features will cost $$ and leaves less $$ for real wattage and power. Does the amp use a toroidal transformer, how big are the capacitors, is it capable of driving the speakers to the desired levels in the room size of your choice. Does the remote and its ergonomics suit you. Will the features expire soon or is the amp future proof. Also which matters more, features or sound quality? Currently I believe the budget amp of the moment is the SR 8001 and the feature rich Yam 2700 is another good amp but VFM is less. For stereo, the Marantz 7001 plus the SA 7001 was a good setup for about 1.5k. More thought later, flu coming on... Last thought for now: If you really want to audition, bring along your own Cds and amp / source
benzx Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 Wow. didn't expect you guys to stay til abt 8pm. If not I could have dropped by to kpo abit hehe. Finished working at 6pm today, and was just 10mins away from Adelphi. hehe

petetherock Posted January 29, 2007 Author Posted January 29, 2007 I am under the weather from being caught in the rain, but I might go later on say Friday for a review and get stuff from Funan too, say around 1pm or so. Confirm when I am well. Again, points to note: Bring your own discs, SPL meter if possible to listen at the same volume and just enjoy the friendship. P

chainsdb Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 hey pete you MUST try the vr-1s in the basment at plinius.....very, very nice and fits your budget.
petetherock Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks How much and do they make HT setups? P hey pete you MUST try the vr-1s in the basment at plinius.....very, very nice and fits your budget.
chainsdb Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks How much and do they make HT setups? P yes they have a centre speaker (and surrounds), forgot how much, but the pair of vr-1s cost around 1.5k. i heard them alongside the totem rainmakers, and their clarity and imaging was just so much more amazing. the vandersteens (1.9K a pair) were also interesting but their boxless sound takes some getting used to....very very open and bright. still the best speakers i heard on the day i was at adelphi were the harbeths. different price and sq class. i thought they were much better than the spendors (which seems overpriced to me).
chainsdb Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 www.vonschweikert.com/vr1.html here is a link to the company. they call themselves the manufacturers of the best loudspeakers in the world.
