i got the surround for $350  and i brought the Marantz SR8001 ($1660)

Since this is my first HT setup, i tink the gurus here can give u better advice.

It a never ending affair, i did my round of audition and end up buying 2.5 times my initial budget, so be prepared  :D

and i still dont have a cd player  :-X

thats a pretty good setup there... the 816 makes me drool...  :P :P :P

how does your surround sounds? does it balance out with the 816?

lastly which svs sub did you get and how much? trying to see which svs is a good fit for the focal speakers.... :)

thks....

Cool...

dont mind me asking how much did the surrounds cost?

also which amps did you buy? stereo amps or A/V amps? ( cost will be great... working on my costings atm)

my thoughts on amps:

- Stereo amps are said to sound better than a/v amps for music, how much better are we talking about here?

- a good a/v that does the job with good SQ for music cost pretty expensive, eg: Arcam....

- will this option work? get a decent stereo amp (how much will that cost? $800 to $1000???) for the 2 front speakers and get another a/v amp for the rest of the speakers (can i get a ok one for about $500-$1000???)

your thought will be appreciated...

thks :)

Why dont you get Rotel 1070 AVR.

Thats top of the range model from Rotel. It just doesnt have HDMI if you are into that.

For 1800$ this is a steal.

It is excellent for Movies as well as music. Should better than an average AVR+ average stereo Amp.

Go audition it at Asia Sound along with Cobalt 826 (or similar speakers). Use the Paradigm Ultracube as sub. Its quite impressive.

in the midst of moving house so dont really have time to properly setup and calibrate yet.

if they dont sounds right then have to burn the already big hole in the pocket bigger  :(

got the PB12+, u can check the latest pricing of svs sub from Quest MO

The cabinet of the V series nice man. Much better looking than the older S series.

And this is a big plus point with my better half.

MA is at Ban Leong first level

The amp Rahul mentioned is the 1067, I believe, but bear in mind it has no HDMI etc

narrow your choices down to 2 amps, 2 speakers or so, so its easier to audition

good luck

I am also curious since I am using XR-55 for a while. If I wanna upgrade to a AVR with HDMI, what are the choices in the market now?

Yep....think that its worth it too but this thread suppose to be about beating the GST increase... ;D Anyway, we tend to get receivers about the same time and even earlier than the U.S. sometimes so there is hope that this could come in Mar or Apr. Anyway, a lot of the other competitors will be joining in the race too.

If you have an exsisting receiver and don't mind waiting then wait till 3rd or 4th quarter to see those new HDMI 1.3 receivers.

If you don't have a receiver and need to get one now, just get it. There is no loss in not getting a HDMI 1.3 receiver where a HDMI 1.1  receiver can also do then same job (some 1.1 may not).

Seriously the whole HDMI 1.3 is confusing and misleading alot of people out there.

Neither do you want to get a MD/Betamax/HDCD/SACD kinda standard equipment which may be neither here nor there .......

Earlier HDMI equipment do have some compatibility issues .......

I think the feature to look out for in amps be it 1.1 or 1.3 is can it process 24/96 5.1 signals to 7.1.

Its a bit OT, but no worries

Thats why like Darth said, if you need one Now, get the best you can or wait (and it can be a long wait) until the formats stabilise. In the intermediate period, there can be a lot of compatability issues, so having ethernet or a RS232 input for upgradability is useful.

No one can tell how a HDMI 1.1 device syncs with a 1.3 or 1.4 because despite the promises, no one has done it yet.

On another note Sherwood has an amp with 1.3 out.

since you guys on the topic on amps...

- how does the Rotel 1067 compare?

- how impt is it to get an amp with HDMI?

Or maybe a better question is what are the consequences or features/functions i cant do with a HDMIless amp compared to one with HDMI? Would it change anything if my LCD has 2 HDMI inputs?

cheers ;D

HDMI is a new technology which essentially combines audio and video into a single cable.

New sound formats are being transmitted through it.

Type HDMI into google, or this forum and heaps will spill out. In fact there is a thread on HDMI 1.3 which will answer a lot of your questions.

The Rotel can be audition at the same shop as your JM Labs, which seem to be your speaker of choice - if you like it, go for it bro, forget KEF if it doesn't sound good even if its cheaper, you will regret that.

Rahul has also heard it, but use your ears.

Personally I don't have HDMI and since my amp is less than 1 year old, I will wait for the format to settle first.

But if you need an amp, its a useful feature, which allows video switching, upsampling and upscaling.

I dunno how much are the totem and JMLab, but did u try Vienna Acoustics, Quad, Spendor, Epos?

For VA, the cheapest floorstander wud be Bach.

For Spendor, the cheapest floorstanders wud be the S6e?

For Quad, the 22L

For Epos, M15.2 or M22

I wud guess most of these r in the region of 2k.
