chainsdb Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 The vr-1s i auditioned were in a shop in the basement. Hard to miss with the speakers displayed at the front. Very good service. I also managed to listen to the totem rainmakers, and vandersteens. The totems had amazing bass for a bookshelf but they sounded a bit laid-back. I preferred the forward staging of the vr-1s. They cost the same at $1500. The vandersteens were interesting. Very very open sound, nice imaging but the highs were shrill - fatigue came into play. but that is maybe because the "boxless" speakers have yet to be run in. also they were very easy to drive - they could reach amazing volumes. also a little laid-back. at $1980, overpriced given that they retail in the US for US$750. The ascends (internet brand) seem to be rated very highly compared to the vr-1s. Can get a five speaker set for US$1000, without shipping. very tempting. Also auditioned a pair of monitor audio bookshelves - going for about $800. can't remember the model (B6?). Easy to listen to but very muddy, lacks the clarity of all the brands above. the difference is obvious. but you get what you pay for, i guess.
chainsdb Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Clearance sale?! Time is right for me to upgrade then! I'm looking at the Chorus S series, are those going at a discounted price? Anyone able to confirm best price at their showroom? Cheers! i believe the s series are sold out.
IwishIwasToneDeaf Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 That's bad, any number I could call and enquire? Anyone in particular i could speak to? Thanks in advance!

IwishIwasToneDeaf Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Oh man...guess i'm really too late and now have to look for them on the resale market...
petetherock Posted January 12, 2007 Author Posted January 12, 2007 Just found out the Paradigm Ultra cube 10 is about 1k - a v good bargain, tight fast and deep - 19Hz or so Epos 22 is 1950 a pair KEC is clearing Epos Old MA Silvers (not RS) is being clear - S6 is about 8hundred plus The decision is between the RS6, GS10 and JM Lab Chorus The Cobalt 816 is about 2k - Asia Sound Linn audio has a 50$ rack - display one Rotel 1067 AVR for 1800 - Asia Sound
rahul Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I finally went ahead and bought my gear today. Not the Jmlabs Chorus 716s, that I had made up my mind about yesterday, but Monitor Audio RS6/RS LCR/B1 surrounds (2200$). Also bought a Marantz 5600 amp for 640$ at (Alpha Audio Adelphi). I liked the older series without HDMI better than the new 5001 (same 90 wpc) in similar price range. Older one sounds better for music and I can live without HDMI for now. Bit silly since both are priced similarly, but had to go with my ears. Older model is also a bit bigger and heavier too. So I guess they cut some corners to put in the HDMI stuff in new model. Had gone down to do HT audition of JMlabs along with a Rotel 1067 AVR. Just didnt get impressed. All effects were falling falt. Inspite of the Paradigm Ultracude 10 being hooked up. JMlabs is nice and detailed but it just doesnt have any low end authority. Played some of my own CDs today. Rock music sounds a bit flat. Its excellent for vocals but music with some low end, falls flat. Changed my mind at the last moment. But I have to give full marks to Asia Sound for excellent service, even though I didnt end up buying the JMlabs. After that I auditioned RS6 again and got sold. They sounded excellent for my music (rock + bit of electronic). Even tried RS8, but they were a bit too loose at the bottom end. Now just have to sort out the cables before I take delivery on Monday. Best of luck for rest of you with your quest ;D
petetherock Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 Well done! Glad it happened for you! BTW can you let me know what you paid for the RS6 and LCR? Deciding between that and the GS10 + GS LCR

ks Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Guys, Have you started to look for a DVD source? Am contemplating between a few: 1) Cambridge Audio DV89 2) OPPO 970HD 3) Denon 2930ci Currently, main preference will probably be 1) and 2) becos of cost issue, but unless can tell me that the difference paid for the Denon is much worth. Main use is to watch DVD(display will be prolly 37" LCD TV), SACD-multichannel. Will also output analog section into my stereo setup as another CD souce. Any recommendations?
DJQ Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 hmmz i am not familiar with ur 1st 2 choices. but if the 2930 is off ur budget, comparing 1930 would make them look better. although some dun like the DCDi in 1930. it still has a delicated audio only scource when you play audio only. still the 2930 suppress in all aspect in terms on both video and audio.

bigred1624705847 Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 well, i actually brought the 800series that night. if you brought your, that would increase the odds more ;D ;D hahaha... nope still in the process of deciding which to get? :P so any comments with your buy? did you buy a 2.0 or 5.1 setup? if i were getting a stereo setup i would get the 800 series, but to get all 6 speakers from JM LAB: 716 + 700 series center, surround, sub = About $4600 and thats a tat too much for me... looking for something less if possible... when i was there i listened to the bookshelf 807, pretty impress with that... good bass... good SQ... looks pretty good... ~ $1500 any speakers out there that sounds just as good or better as the JM LAB and cost less? thks :)

( cost will be great... working on my costings atm) my thoughts on amps: - Stereo amps are said to sound better than a/v amps for music, how much better are we talking about here? - a good a/v that does the job with good SQ for music cost pretty expensive, eg: Arcam.... - will this option work? get a decent stereo amp (how much will that cost? $800 to $1000???) for the 2 front speakers and get another a/v amp for the rest of the speakers (can i get a ok one for about $500-$1000???) your thought will be appreciated... thks :)

It a never ending affair, i did my round of audition and end up buying 2.5 times my initial budget, so be prepared :D and i still dont have a cd player :-X

Much better looking than the older S series. An additional downfiring port does gives more weight in bass - I like that, but may not be suitable for all, depending on individual preference and room acoustics. Just a little pity that JMlab did not use the W-type sandwich cone woofer for the Chorus V series. ??? I thought they would as they usually allows technology to trickle down from the higher end models. I sense that Asia Sound is getting more business nowadays ya? . . Damn, the boss should have changed the salemen long time ago man. ;D
