BobaFett Posted July 5, 2003 Author Posted July 5, 2003 I think can only buy MiniPod from US. Too bad no local distributor anymore. Expect to pay about $800+ with shipping.
00ttik Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 ebay selling US$110 per pcs w/o shipping... hope it helps
reccaflame Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Got a pair of these beauties when Soundroom was still around. Unfortunately, too late to get the basspod when the shop went bust. Try not to deal in ebay other than local. Too many fraud cases and also our local credit cards does not cover these types of cases. Got burnt twice already. Can try audiogon though. Although a bit more expensive, you can rest assured to receive your goods. So far so good for me... CHeers
TheSting Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Hey.. reccaflame, how do u find the minipods? read a few reviews around, and the word was that they sound surprisingly look for their looks.. etc
IceDream Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Got mine from Soundroom when it is still around. Very good WAF. I got the silver one, looks very good beside my silver TV. Now I cannot upgrade my speakers until I find one just as good looking. As for sound, IMO it has pretty good clear mid range. The highs can be a little bright depending on the music. Only problem is the lack of bass. For me it is the best sounding speakers for its cute looks. Of course a rectangle box half its price will sound better.
reccaflame Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Agreed with IceDreams. Mine are the black ones. Had wanted the white ones but wifey thought otherwise. I am partnering the minipods with the Marantz Layla also from Soundroom. I guess many people like the minpod looks first rather than their musical reproduction. That's the premium to pay over the boring rectangular speakers. But surprisingly they can still sound good in the midrange. with detail musical reproduction. They still give a good punch if your bass does not have too much treble or else will be quite boomey. Glad that there are so many kakis in the forum owning the minipods and so much interest on it. Too bad no more local dealer as now they have completed their full range of minipod speakers. Cheers
TheSting Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 hehe, yeah .. the LOOKS! that's why i'm kind so interested in them... was thinking of getting 4 of them, and attach them to the wall at ceiling height from each corner of my room. I think, since they released the basspod, kinda helped with that particular short coming. But not cheap hoh. hmm, I think they still have a showroom in HK right? hopefully, when i go end of the year, can grab the set. anyone got any idea how many i can bring in?.. without tax complications? i just love the new translucent ones
mantre Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 The minipods indeed have good WAF. I do agree that they are a tad bass shy. Initially, I wanted the silver pair but my wife adores the white ones. In the end, I gotten both pair, also the Bass Station. Too bad the Cinepod will not hit our shore. If not, I will have the complete Minipod HT package. ;) BTW, anyone tried the Housepod (red pair) when Soundroom was still around?
reccaflame Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Thought the pair in the showroom was green. Edmund (correct me if wrong) was saying they were not for sale as of limited edition or something like that. But seems quite hard to drive though. Bring back fond memories talking about the minipods. Anyone getting the grill covers to cover the 'yellow eyes'? Cost around US$50 a pair I think. Cheers
MC_Hammer Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 The yellow cone adds to the beauty of the minipod...unless u got kids who will destroy the cones , why wanna cover up ? The minipod sounds a bit muffled..., almost completed modding the minipods last nite...left only one side speaker binding post to change(don't like their cheapo spring binding post )...the modded minipod sounds so much better with Solen caps n QED bronze cables + some cushion pillow cotton wool behind the woofer n covering the PCB crossover ! ! Bass light ?...I hooked it up with a JBL PS120 subwoofer...sounds great !

Bass light ?...I hooked it up with a JBL PS120 subwoofer...sounds great ! How did you open up the minipods to mod. I was thinking of changing the binding post too. I am currently using DNM Reson cables. Maybe if I open it I will change the cables inside to DNM too. When you say after mod sounds better. In what way was the improvement better?
MC_Hammer Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 How did you open up the minipods to mod. I was thinking of changing the binding post too. I am currently using DNM Reson cables. Maybe if I open it I will change the cables inside to DNM too. Pull out the rubber ring on the woofer, u will see 4 screws to get in...the crossover pcb is supported by 3 white plastic clips !...dismantling the pcb is a pain ! the spring binding posts is supported by a screw.u can screw it out from the port at the bottom. To install new banana binding post...u need to drill the hole bigger . I use the binding post from Martin Electronics...$5 each ! the three caps inside are 20uf, 10 uf n 3.3 uf + I add a 0.1 uf Auricaps bypass parallel to the 20 uf ! The three caps I change to Solen...bought from Wells Audio : 20 uf $12 X2 10 uf $$8 X2 3.3uf $$ X 2 0.1 Auricaps $12 X 2 From Martin Electronics(running out of stocks soon ! ) + a cushion pillow ($4.50 ) bought from OG for the cotton to put some as dampling behind the woofer to reduce colouration ! Cables I use QED Silver for Woofer n QED bronze for Tweeter n from binding posts to pcb. My total cost of mod + $111.50 Note : do not ask me to mod...I hate to mod PCB unless very necessary !...PCB have to drill the hole bigger to accomodate thicker QED cables. Took me about 4-5 hours per PCB...total took me about 3 nites to finish modding>>>>no FUN but ALL WORTH IT !

Also what is the cost of the minipod?

Thanks for all your instructions. I will open up the minipods up tonight and have a look inside. Need to understand the difficulty before I can think of under taking the mod job.
mantre Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 How much did you pay for the Bass Station last time? ??? Also what is the cost of the minipod? I paid about $1.1k for the Bass and $700 for a pair of Mini.
reccaflame Posted July 9, 2003 Posted July 9, 2003 During Soundroom last months of operation, there was a package sale for a basspod and a pair of minpod for $1600.
