Well, I ok. But is a SVGA resolutions, was told that sharp XGA resolutions sell @7999. But if got budget LG will be good choice.

Yep..agree that Sharp's XGA resol would definitely be better but its at a $3K premium.

But thinking abt it, for $5K, can get a good HT LCD projector + stewart screen and possibly even a progressive scan DVD player thrown in.

I suppose the draw would be the slim factor and wow appeal of a plasma.

Gurus out there, pls correct me if i m wrong but I suppose it won't really make much of a difference since the theoretical image size from a de-interlaced image (progressive scan) of a NTSC DVD is 480p which would nicely match the pixel resolution of the SVGA TV. Where you would get the benefit is if you are using a HTPC with RGB output whereby you can use the superior scaling of the PC to enjoy the higher resolution of the XGA (its not really true XGA as it is 16:9 vs 4:3) TV.

yes u r right. in fact for 480p, the SD panel is slightly better than the HD, because there is a direct mapping of the source. HD on the other hand needs to scale the source. HD panels are only better if you have HD content like 720p and above. HTPC is not necessarily better for dvds, because it is basically still scaling 480 lines. For computer contents (eg games), higher resolution definitely is better.

Of course HD panels will have less obvious screen door. but for viewing distance > 2m, screen door is no issue.

Thanks....another question:

If brand X quote contrast ration of 1:1000 and brand Y quote 1:3000....does it really mean brand Y is better? As in do they follow some kinda standard in quoting these figures?

Lastly, if u all dun mind, what is screendoor huh? I hv seen this mentioned many times in relation with projector but very pai seh to ask....thanks again.

contrast: con ratio numbers have no standard, so X's 1000 might not be that bad, and Y's 3000 might not be that great. Must see yourself. Also some manufacturers are more conservative than others.

screendoor effect: it's the gap between the pixels of a digital device, when seeing close enough, or your eyes are good enough, can be seen. This resembles the (exaggerated) situation when seeing through a glass screen window/door. U go in close, u see the view behind the glass, together with the sqaures of the window; you stand 5 meters away u dun see the squares any more. For plasma, you go see real close I'm sure u can see all the individual pixels. A bit further away they all "blend" into the picture already.
