exSG Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Hi everyone, I would like to use my Panasonic DVD system's speakers when watching Netflix movies but the sound is not coming through. I have also tried using a HDMI cable to connect the DVD to the TV directly but it didn't work. Can anyone please advise? Thanks.
Anthony John Colbert Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) make sure your TV has ARC on one of the HDMI ports (Arc is Audio Return Channel). If not you may need to get an optical cable and use one of the optical inputs. ARC channels are limited to stereo on most TV's, only the latest ones with eARC support full multi channel. (Ive heard that some tv's with the older ARC will do multi channel but not sure which models). The optical will be multi channel but in a compressed format. Hope this helps Edited April 27, 2020 by colby1970
exSG Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Hi Colby, Thanks for your reply. I have plugged in the HDMI cable into the ARC HDMI on the TV but didn't work. Does it mean I have to get an optical cable then? Thanks.
vuman619 Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 Hey exSG, I don't think your Panasonic player can take input from your tv to output sound. Just to confirm can you please post the model player you have. Though I'm fairly certain DVD players can't take external input of sound and video unless there is a specific HDMI "in" port. Also ARC which is available on HDMI 2.0 does Dolby Digital+ and DTS-HD and eARC available on HDMI 2.1 does Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio.
exSG Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 Hi Vuman, Thanks for helping. It is Panasonic SA BT 230. The instruction manual seems to state it can. Cheers.
vuman619 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Ok looks like the player does support it, you have to select "ARC" as the source as per page 23 of the manual - https://www.manualslib.com/manual/778390/Panasonic-Sc-Bt230.html?page=23#manual You should be able to run an optical cable from the TV to the player and also use "Digital In 1" which would provide exactly the same functionality with less issues as ARC can be bbuggy sometimes. For my TV I sometimes have to turn my receiver off then on again for ARC to work. Though that manual is for the "SC-BT230" not "SA-BT230".
exSG Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Thanks again Vuman for your help. It is connected via ARC with HDMI cable. Didn't work. Don't really want to get an optical cable.
vuman619 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Last resort would be to make sure your cable supports the bandwidth required for ARC i.e. HDMI 2.0+
exSG Posted May 10, 2020 Author Posted May 10, 2020 Thank you very much Vuman. Will find one that is. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
