eleventyseven Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 If you scratch around you might be able to pick up an Integra DTR-7.8 (last years model) for under $1,500

Thornton Melon Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Thornton if you haven't bought one yet I'd get a HK 355. See if you can audition one or your welcome to listen to my 255. Hi Rob,where in sydney can you buy them, anywhere near the Sutherland Shire. keen to look at a HK 355. Cheers. Thornton
Juicester Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 not that you should live and die by there word, but the HK255 got canned by what hifi. I'm still interested in the 355 though. Take any review with a grain of salt. (they did say it was attractive though)...
duncan4x4 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I've just spent the last month trawling through reviews and auditioning avr's. Result is that l bought a Denon 2809 yesterday for $1486! I'm really happy with that price as the lowest l could find other than that was $1650 but l got it through an authorised dealer whom l'd bought some other stuff from previously. He asked me not to mention him either. However the $1650 quote was over the phone to another authorised dealer / installer. I also auditioned the HK355 but was really put off by the reliability issues that are on this and other international forums. However for shear punchy dynamics in a HT (watching latest Batman), the HK did put up a fantastic show. Bullets & explosions were unreal! The Denon l auditioned was a 2808 or maybe a 2308 as 2809 wasn't in. This wasn't as punchy but didn't make me cringe with the very screechy high frequencies. So l believe as a all-round unit the 2309 would be better - music, radio etc than the HK. l also know that one avr used a dig coax and the other HDMI to hook up to the amps, just not sure which way around though. The HK got real hot too. But 35amp (spec) would do that! They were driving a pair of Jamo floorstanders too. I have Jamo E770 floorstanders so hopefully that was representative. The HK was $1288 and in stock. The 2809 will take a couple of days. Key thing for me is to get the order in prior to 1Jan09 when ALL manufacturers are upping the prices by 10% - 25% according to every retailer l have spoken to. Now l have to get some new digi leads. Anybody bought dig-coax or optical from cablechick, foxtail (www.ezyhd.com.au), cinemalink (www.clink.com.au) or (psraudio.com.au)? Your comments would be appreciated. Plan to replace the mains with Chord Carnival Silverscreen. Is this worth the money? Now for an offtopic - As a Newbee here, why cant l post a topic? I've had to add this as a reply to somebody elses topic - confused! Have a great Crissy to all. Muttlee
petetherock Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 duncan4x4 You need to rack up a few more posts before you can start a thread. Anyway, have a look at the info I placed in my review of the 2309 and 2809 in the review section, it may help you get started. Cheers
Juicester Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 i guess if this thread is still relevant, best $1500 amp going around imho is the Pioneer LX-71 (can be had for around $1500-$1550)....

That's not an amp l even considered. Not sure why, just didn't pick up on any threads at the time. My shortlist was Onkyo 706 Marantz 6003 Denon 2809 HK 355 Well done to all those that grabbed a bargain. I'll just be happy that l got a good amp at a good price and don't look back l suppose ..

So l'm really happy with my $1486 deal !!
Kostyanych Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 After a bit of looking around tonight, i've noticed the Yamaha 663 recommended, but i'm put off by the lack of black-black HDMI pass-through. Plus it's got no learning remote. I am sorry but.... What is black-black HDMI pass-through? It looks like I am missing something....
JS1000 Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I've just spent the last month trawling through reviews and auditioning avr's. Result is that l bought a Denon 2809 yesterday for $1486! I am in the $1500-ish range and I am compelled by the imminent price increases to fire a couple of quick questions. I am in Melb and ready to purchase immediately, so feel free to reply via PM. 1. Can you get close to that 1486 price again? I can't get within $400 of that. The retailers I have spoken to recently are using the price increases on 1 Jan 09 as fuel for keeping prices around $18-1900. 2. When viewing over HDMI, does the OSD display the regularly used functions such as volume, source, etc? I have read conflicting reviews as to whether the common functions are displayed over HDMI (I know the Audyssey set up is). This is a critical issue for me as my monitor is over HDMI and I need this info displayed on screen. Thanks heaps for any info you can share.
theoldrat Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I too would also be interested, please let us know. Cheers
petetherock Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 BTB info on the 663 + info on the Denon are available in the reviews I posted in the review section. No OSD on anything which is input on HDMI. Cheers
pbouzaid Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) To reiterate a previous poster - I managed to get the Pioneer LX71 for $1600 at JB, so if your budget can stretch that far, and if you like that amp - I'd go for it. I am very happy with mine. Edited December 28, 2008 by Peter Bouzaid

I am not in the market for an AVR but at $1400 but there are better choices around at this price level than 804 which is essentially two generations old and does not have the ability to decode the newer surround sound format. I have been to JB in Melbourne this afternoon the new Onkyo 706 is easily available at $1290, run out models of Pioneer 50/60 can be had for below $1400, Onkyo's integra equivalent models are around for similar price as Onkyo.
Guest Chyster Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Gee, that's a pretty good price - I too was in JB HiFi in Melbourne this afternoon and they had about 4 units of the 706 sitting on their floor with a price ticket of $1877... Has anyone done some research on the differences between this and the 606? The RRP is almost $900 difference so there must be some sort of overwhelming reason why such a large price increase considering they both put out 175W and have 4 x HDMI inputs...

rjay Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I am looking for a little advice and info regarding receivers, particularly the Denon AVR-1909 and AVR-2309 models. I have just upgraded to a Panasonic TH-50px80a Plasma and Panasonic BW-500 blu-ray DVD recorder and as i have a 7 year old receiver (Denon AVR-2801) i will need to also update the receiver in order to enjoy the new Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. I have been very happy with the 2801 for both home theatre and music and having read reviews on the new Denons i'm sure i would be just as happy by sticking with Denon. My speaker set-up is Monitor Audio silver 8i's as mains, monitor audio bronze B1 rears, Jamo 7.2 centre and B&W asw600 sub. The AVR-2801 receiver is 90 watts per channel as is the AVR-1909, question is would i gain much advantage in listening pleasure by having the extra 10 watts per channel of the AVR-2309, also in general overall terms would i be gaining much of an advantage with the 2309 over the 1909? Bearing in mind the additional $400 odd cost of the 2309? Any relative info and advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

dantan Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Hi rjay, I wouldn't be too concerned about the extra wattage claimed by the manufacturer. Most manufacturers of A/V Receivers claim ridiculously high power out-puts that are simply unrealistic for their power supplies. If the Denon AVR1909 has enough 'bells and whistles' for you and you are happy to stick with Denon, then it might be a good match for your loudspeakers.
