h45e Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) I have just got a PS50A550, here is my PERSONAL views on the product. Now, everyone knows of the "slow channel change" so I wont be saying anything about that (hope sammy releases a new firmware to fix this problem.) The gripe I have is when I change to my AV unit via HDMI it takes a short time for the image to show up. But the thing is HUGE, it is wide as my entertainment unit. Now onto the image, the image is beautiful, nice crisp colour and nice tones... I have used these settings for anyone that wants to follow. settings HDMI Mode: Movie Cell Light : 10 Contrast : 80 Brightness : 53 Sharpness : 0 Colour : 47 Tint : 50 50 Gamma : -1 Colour : Auto Colour Temp : Warm 2 White Balance Menu: Red-Offset : 29 Green-Offset : 25 Blue-Offset : 27 Red-Gain : 6 Green-Gain : 25 Blue-Gain : 24 Flesh Tone : 0 xvYCC : On HDMI Black Level : Normal Just Scan enabled Movie Mode High Just scan enabled Noise Reduction : High Edited November 1, 2008 by h45e
kulfi Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 So where's the review ? I can see the settings and two sentences about the PQ. Oh well, at least some lazy people will get the settings out of this.
Owen Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) Sorry to be negative but those settings seem very suspect to me, the alterations to the color offset and gain settings are completely arbitrary without calibration equipment or a calibrated reference monitor for comparison. Turning on xvYCC color is not a good idea as no video is encode in that format, the result will be over saturated colours. Noise reduction on “High” is very likely to cause problems with motion blur and or loss of detail, normally low or off is the go on most TV’s. Samsungs use a lot of sharpening and the result is nasty and artificial, I have never looked at the menu on a current Sammy to see if there is some sort of “Picture Enhancement” functions that can be turned off to get rid of the over sharpening, Samsungs used to have such a “feature” and it needed to be turned off. Turning the “Sharpness” control down may or may not cure the problem, if not a service menu fix may be possible. Without the over sharpening the Samsungs would be good units. I was wondering if the new firmwares makes the channel changes faster and or fixes anything else. I want to buy one ' Thanks.
CliffofOz1503559525 Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Just wanted to post some pricing info on this model. Figured this thread would do rather than start a new one. 2009-04-13 Good Guys, Coffs Harbour $2999 RRP $2499 marked price $1970 sale price. Took in pricing info from www.shopbot.com.au and www.staticice.com.au. Online retailers selling it as low as $1999, with an average around $2200. Didn't think they would match, but no hesitation - even under cut. Also had the unit in stock. Seems amazing value for a 50" true HD panel, though reserving judgment until get the unit home and see how it performs in the real world.
bloody Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 My old man just got his tv the other day and all I can say is for the money ($2k) it's an amazing bit of gear, blu ray absolutely blew me away and 1HD with the AFL was amazing. dialled in these settings; http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvrev...g-pn50a650.html even though it is the model above I thought they would have been pretty similar settings for both, so I used the same One thing though is that it definately does run hot.
BloodyKev Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I got this one a few weeks ago and very impressed. Did have a 720p lcd before this and this was like seeing blu-ray goodness all over again. Found Burn-in basically is non-existant so far which was a concern as I game alot. Was good for $1850 about the same price as most 720p plasmas, Oh btw the internal speaker is awful. And the stand is on a slight slant which is annoying (im sure just needs screws loosend, levellled and re-tightened) but if these little issues are not important to you it is a great looking product even when it is turned off. Even though its PQ indepandant, The sammy's are a great modern looking product, 9 out of 10 contracted Sydney Roosters playing staff agree.

A 768p 50" Plasma would offer a similar visual improvement from a normal viewing distance of 2.5 meters plus for only $1500. Edited April 13, 2009 by Owen

But there are some much better LCD sets than my last set. Much, much better. But I really noticed the motion and contrast far more than the picture.

Stanbridge Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 $1850?.... $1500?...... Where are you guys finding them for this price? Also, where's the cheapest place I can get one of these? Any info is very much appreciated folks! Cheers
nurseboucher Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Stanbridge, unless you had your heart set on this model, or a certain price, for a few hundred more the new model PS50B550 is a far better tv by all accounts, and looks REALLY good, even when not on!! I got it for $2299 from HN, price matching to an online store. db.
