Trofius Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 HEy all I finally get to upgrade the main 3, even without selling my existing main speakers JBL E80, and EC 35 centre.. but would be nice.. Anyways i am off to the big smoke soon and am chasing suggestions around the $1800 mark, for all 3, I know it seems a big meger, but the other choice is to just get a new set of JBL L890 mains, as i already have the matching L820 centre which does a great job, The L890's sound pretty good and are a noticable step up from the existing speakers when i compared them. Note: there is no decent Hi Fi places in Rocky.. I have a NAD 955 to drive them. So any thoughts, suggestions....Apart from keep saving, if i do this the cash will reach a , "you arn't spending that much" amount, and I want a full front end..all 3.
yamapro Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Hi Mick, I am running Krix KDX Ms and a Centrix - these or a full KDX system should be around your price point... certainly not the last word but well worth an audition. As your KA sub system is handling bass you could consider moving away from FS mains and looking at (listening to) some nice standmounts (like the aforementioned Krix or similar) I have found the dollar goes a lot further in a nice simple well made 2 way SM speaker and will never look back (not so long as i have budgetary concerns anyway) Just one train of thought for you anyway
Trofius Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 (edited) Yep Alex, i have thought of going the bookshelf idea. I have tried my L820 surrounds as mains and they perform really well, and shine in the upper and mid range that the E80 is less impressive at. They do cost as much as my current mains however! so its expected. The L820 are actually supposed to be full range 4 way bookshelves, They do lack bass however being sealed, flat wall mounts. But they do match sitting up on the sub, which will have a twin this year. and the centre has the same speakers, and design. I am wanting to have a look at the krix speakers, i have never heard or seen them, as mentioned up here the range is a tad limited now the hi fi place has gone. before they left i did get to listen to some energy floorstanders,, and some def techs, not sure what models, i liked teh energy speakers. I have also heard some aron canter? speakers while in Brisbane for training at Toowong, they sounded really good in there perfectly setup, big amp, sound treated rooms! Shonky* Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Only place in Brisbane to listen to Krix is Harvey Norman in Fortitude Valley. Expect to pay full retail - they wouldn't budge a cent on the price for me buying 5.1 + receiver.
yamapro Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 That's Ridiculous!!! If that is the case then use Hardly Normals to have a listen and if you want to buy get a price from Clef HiFi in Melb - they are happy to ship interstate. Then you can decide your best path forward...
Trofius Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the Kri tip, will put them on the list of places to visit. Alex, what do you think about maybe a DIY trio of 3 way LCRs, maybe so they match perfectly to sitting on the subs, and can alter the design slightly for the center..... Thinking 3 Tweeters, 6 mids, and 3 small ~6-8 inch woofers plus crossovers, maybe using scanspeak. peerless and vaf driver combos. I could use the cash to get the speakers, cross overs etc, and just trickle buy the mdf etc....M-T-M beside the W, for each. Damm i feel a few projects comming on......I have sat looking at the sub listening to a bit of music and seriosly thinking about a design that would suit nicely.. Only issue is the tweeters would sit slightly high as teh sub is already 96cm tall....maybe angle down slightly, with a bit of angle adjustment...... Off to think,... Edited June 14, 2008 by trofius

G'day Mick, I think a DIY trio of LCRs would be brilliant, i have often thought of going this way myself but lack the time and realistically the cabinetry skills to make it worthwhile at this stage... every time i look at upgrading gear the DIY thought comes back into my head though I have no doubt you could do an excellent job of it, with a little forward planning there is no reason why you couldn't have an excellent 'reference' system for far less than retail and I'm sure your speakers would come up looking a million dollars too I can't really advise you on the best combination or design for you but there is loads of info out there on the net... Mark Techer has designed his entire CAVX speaker range around Peerless drivers (i think) and I'm sure a chat with him would be worthwhile (possibly inspirational )... Among many other designs out there i have found some of Sigfried Linkwitz speakers to really engage my curiousity - but before checking this link be warned that it will take you to another world of active speakers and crossovers and open bipolar speakers... Keep me posted on your journey
