Forum Outage

Featured Replies

Hi all,

We suffered another outage due to a few issues which I won't elaborate on. The issues that were resolvable have been resolved.

Naturally, we lost some posts made late Saturday which I apologise for. But, we continue on and I'll continue doing what I can to mitigate these issues in future. It is important to note that despite comments made on Whirlpool, the issue was not a security breach nor anything sinister.

It was similar to the event on May 16, which is partially attributed to a new MySQL query mechanism that appears to have crept its way into the 2.3.5 release.

Well done on your effort, good to see you back up and running

And a B-I-G thank you for keeping us informed in the "other" thread.

Pity about the hospitality.....

Pity about the hospitality.....

did you manage to catch the other forum I was directing to until the post got hidden? The hospitality would've been much better there.

That's fine.

I expected the thread was going to get slapped around a bit once the moderators came online. Nothing to say about it really, they have their rules and an armada of moderators looking to chop your thread at the earliest sign of randomness. Really is the two extremes of moderation, us and them.

Hopefully Shirley kept you entertained.

Yeah we're all glad you're not that anal............well at last most of the time. :winky:

Hope you don't mind me asking

What seems to be the issue with DTV Forums? They seem to run so slow and hang when I use them

Is it an issue of bandwidth limitations or server spec? Or is it just a rare occurrence that I happen to stumble upon once in a while?

  • Author

The issue for the past 30 minutes was a backup running to check some things; unfortunately when a backup runs the tables get locked and forums tend to time out. This happens nightly so will explain one hour per day of slowness.

The other slowness is a mixture of connections counts (20%), SQL query timeouts (20%), table handling (20%), bandwidth limitations (10% - remember this stuff costs real dollars) and server spec (30%). It's a large forum with a high query count per hour.

That would explain it then

I'll pass on the Whirlpool suggestion thanks...

Quality over quantity

And I thought it may have been the Foxtel HD installer pulling the wrong plug  just to justify the $200 fee !!

Good to have DTV back, thats for sure! :D

What was wrong with the hospitality? TBH, you just just went over there and made it like a big DTV forum gathering, going off topic with useless posts that were not even related to the problem. Im sorry, but thats not on! Oh, some idiot mentioned talking about footy tips. Well, wrong section... glad it was locked.

Your post is exactly why the members love this forum.

You can have an opinion, stray OT for a while, without fear of a moderator deleting/hiding your post.

Not everything that is said here is pro dtvforum, but thats okay, we live in Australia, where we are still able to have an opinion without big brother coming over the top and shutting our mouths (and then sending less than polite pm's to those it deems OT)

Your post and opinions are welcome here as are mine, but, most try not to resort to "name calling".

Don't get me wrong, its not a free for all here, if you do the wrong thing there are repercussions, but, it seems that those here are not so quick to reprimand or threaten, perhaps they have better things to do.

It was one post....no-one hijacked multiple threads, or spammed or did anything really annoying, our crime was to say hello to each other and :shriek in horror: some even talked about footy tips...... :o

One approach to moderating forums is to stamp down on everything, another is to allow the forum users to bring things back on topic and report issues that get out of hand. Without drawing too long a bow, one reflects a police state mentality, one treats its users as mature individuals who only need to be pulled up when they go completely out of bounds. I know which I prefer but to each their own I guess.

Oh and well done on getting the site back up Caniffe, I had to sit and watch movies on the weekend instead. Imagine having to actually use my HT instead of just discussing it :) Well done.

Nice, ThePMan, if that is your real name.... :D

Could someone explain how this looks better on a message board than what was deleted?

First impressions I would get as a forum visitor is it is run like a police state where peoples' views are hidden from public view and phrases such as "pointless" & "off-topic" are used ad-nauseum to somehow try to justify their own special brand of iron fisted over-zealous modding & heavy handedness. It's as if members were prisoners & the lights go out at Eleven.

As said above all the chat was confined to two threads so it's not like we were spamming the place FFS.

If anything the fact that our posts were deleted served only to make us want to post again.

Anyway, stuff it -_-

For as long as this site is up and running I'm happy and have no need to post in some "dead parrot's society" :P

While the DTV Forum is down, there is no problem with Whirlpool being used as a means of updating DTV members re the status of the forum and its estimated recovery time.

That does not extend to dozens of posts which break our rules. This is not an off-topic forum, and posts are expected to be relevant to the issues surrounding the status of the DTV forum – not an excuse for DTV members to engage in pointless chat and banter with each other.

I'm glad to hear that management will use that forum to update DTV contributors during outages

The Whirlpool ISP/broadband forum is a valuable resource, so I respect their rules.

Don't worry PZ it's not just first impressions, it's one of the reasons I rarely go there any more and I've been a member there for 3 years.

It could have been a good PR exercise, but it seems that was beyond them.

Well it's their forum I guess, they just didn't do themselves any favours last night.

Have you read their rules on "Pointless Posting"?

Pointless Posting Sprees

Posting pointless comments solely to increase post count is not appreciated.

This occurs when a user posts a number of posts with the apparent intention of bringing their post count up to a point where they become a Participant or Forum Regular. This may be marked by Thread Bumping, Crossposting, or making Off-topic posts or threads.

Based on that I'd say none of the posts made in that thread had the Sole Intention to increase post counts. I can accept the purpose of the pointless posting rule, but I don't believe the moderation was warranted based on the definition of the rule. Seemed to me they were abusing that rule to simply keep us from staying around...........They don't have to worry about that, I wont be returning to their site.

cheers

Over the years I've seen whirlpool slowly but steadily get worse. The moderators appear to be essentially an elite men's club. Once you are in or friends with the mods you suddenly find you can do a lot more than you could before. If this point is raised there will be much consternation and chest beating denying that this is how Whirlpool is, but you don't have to look too hard to find instances of regular members posts being removed by a mod, added back by another and then removed again with the reason being any number of things only to have the mod that removed the post in the first place transgress the exact same rules in another thread or another 'in' member do exactly the same thing in another thread with no action being taken against them.

Be glad DTVforum is nothing like that.
