Hi Folks, today I tried to turn on my PS3 for the first time in a few days, and it just beeped at me 3 times quickly. It's dead. :(

Rang up Sony and they were pretty helpful - nothing they can do about it, it's dead, so they're going to e-mail me a barcode to take to the Post Office which they'll scan in and get a Reply Paid address. I still have to pay for packaging, and they suggested sending it registered post as well (which I will do - shouldn't be too expensive). So yes, it should be a pretty harmless process.

The downsides:

1. They will be sending me back a refurbished PS3.

2. They will wipe the hdd/give me a different wiped one.

3. It will take 15 - 20 days!

I'm not too concerned about 1 and 2, but 15 - 20 days without my Blu-ray player is going to suck a bit. :P Not sure if/how I can re-download purchased games either.

Has anyone else had a dead PS3?

Take the hard drive out and ghost it onto another hard drive. It's just FAT32, easy to do.

Also once you log into your PSN account on your new PS3 you can just download games you've already purchased again.

I had to send mine back for repairs a few months ago and they sent me an email that had the barcode on it, I took it to the postoffice and they gave me a box and bubble wrap included when they scanned the barcode, it shouldnt be any out of pocket expense to you at all, its a warranty job so Sony pays for it. They need your hardrive and yes they do wipe it so transfer any saves you want. As already stated you can re download any games you bought off the PSN for free. I got my unit back in 7 days.

I've sent my ps3 on the 4th March, as of yesterday sony haven't recieved it yet.

I rang Australian Post - who said they'll do an investigation to see where the unit is. Aust Post said sony should have recieved it within a couple of days.

What should I do if they can't find my PS3?

Cheers

Did you use registered post? Was the package insured?

Not Registered post, wasnt insured, bad mistake. Lucky I got the xe1 and ep10 to play with.

Should I wait and pursue this with aust post or sony or just buy a new Ps3?

Thanks

SONY SONY SONY

Sony paid the postage, the issue is between SONY and Aus. Post.

Lodged mine 5/3 at Blacktown Post Office, lees then 900m from AP Business and Distribution Center where Po box6947 is located. Sony Claim not to have recieved it as of close of business 14/3. I call BS (ex postie) They would have had it 6/3. Informed Sony of all these details, they haven't replied, except to resend returns PDF link WTF. Not even to get copy of Postage receipt to chase up. Sony is stalling for some reason. Maybe there is time limit on turn arounds in the fair trading act of 74, and they do the sly to get around it when supply is an issue.

Read on another forum, some guy got registered post confirmation, yet Sony sent confirm email 7 days later, total 5 week turnaround. Sony is stalling, give em hell.

Woah, I'm surprised at how many dead unit's I'm reading about. Seems to be a well kept secret. Perhaps the 360 isn't worse.......

mate, there will always be some failed units. And when they do fail people are more likely to post about it. THe 360 has a known issue and a majority of people wouldnt bother posting it in forums. But im pretty sure its no where near the 360 failure rate.

I don't know anyone personally who's had a PS3 fail. Everyone I know who has an Xbox 360 has had a RROD replacement. They don't seem fussed by it and just accept it, they also don't make a big deal about it, but they've definately had a replacement.

Well I have the same 360 I bought at launch (midnight launch so one of the very first) and it has never skipped a beat (neither have my 2 PS3's).

according to retailers, last I heard was the PS3 failure rate was at about 3%; the Xbox 360 at about 10%

i think you'll find studies has shown closer to 16% (but even that was bias), some have stated 33% (but i think that is BS too), maybe somewhere in the middle?...

Woohoo, tried to fire up my PS3 this morning, and it worked, so yay, don't have to go through the rigmarole of getting it replaced. W00t!

Does anyone experience this problem? My PS3 won't start up at first power on. I have to switch off the power at the back and turn it on again.
