jokiin Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 As it can access and read mp3 and jpg files from a USB Flash Drive I can't see why it can't also write to it, (with a firmware update). Not possible with this model, there may be another model later though that can record straight to a USB connected hard drive, still in the development stages at the moment though
jokiin Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 While on the topic of HDD, has anybody discover/realise that when viewing a recording, it seems to miss a few seconds and shudder? Just wondering if it's only me and my crappy HDD or a common occurence. If the shudder is identical each time you view the recording (indicating that the fault is in the recording) then it may be your signal quality is slightly low, if it is just something that happens at the start of a recording and is not identical then it may be a hard drive buffer issue perhaps
I am Murphy Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Thanks to Colin 2095 and jok11n for their posts in response to my question regarding file transfer from the DVX. Regards, RK

Will have to record something and watch it twice . Not sure if brain can deal with it Does not happen at the start of the recording, it's somewhere in the middle. I tell you, it's a conspiracy theory. I recorded House which is the one that has slight jumps in it. All the adverts are ok. The actual episode is the one that suffers the jumps. About 2 secs every 5-10 minutes.
jokiin Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 About 2 secs every 5-10 minutes. Don't have a box in front of me to check right now but can you check if there is a PAL/NTSC setting option in the menu and if so make sure it is correctly set, not sure that this is the issue anyway but remember a similar issue with another box and it was an incorrect menu setting that was tripping things up, maybe not the issue (may not even have that option either) but no harm in checking. Also see if you can identify any pattern to the problem, do you only get this issue on one channel etc
Guest roylow Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 In brief:* Google "pvr101disk", download and install. "Clever" mode works fine for me. * Use pvr101disk to mount the drive. You should then be able to see some d.ts files, as read-only. MPlayer is one freeware player that can play the d.ts files directly, but the sound and video are usually out of sync, so..... * Google "ProjectX", download and install. There's an option for "Windows look and feel" if you want it. * "Add" the d.ts file(s) to ProjectX, optionally edit out unwanted bits and / or add chapter points, set your output directory, then demux (it's the default option) by clicking "QuickStart". * Do what you like with the demuxed sound and video files. eg; To create a DVD..... * Google "IFOEdit" and / or "MuxMan", download - no installation required, although they might be zipped. * Remux the sound and video files (and chapter points, if you bothered creating them) with IFOEdit or MuxMan. * Burn the resultant DVD files with your favourite burning program. I am trying to follow your instructions for converting a Std. Definition TV recording on a DVX-555U pvr and burning it to DVD. Successfully mounted the HDD (via a USB removable drive) but did not get any d.ts files. Instead I got a folder designated q:\recordings000003 (eg.) containing the following files: data, index, info and pmt. The data file was large and presumably contains the video. Where do I go from here?. thanks Roy Low, Newcastle, NSW
Colin 2905 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Where do I go from here? I've always seen them as "d.ts" files, but what happens when you add the "data" file to ProjectX?

negatron1503562090 Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Hi tehre, am new to the forum and foudn this thread when i googled 'dvx555u' Great to see an active group discuss this unit given that the manual was very poorly written indeed! I picked mine up last night from Strathfield and chucked in an old 40 gb i had laying around. Everything seems to work except that when i try put the HDD into an external usb box and try to mount it on the PC the PC says that the hdd is unformated! Perhaps my new dvs firmware uses a different format from the rest of you? Mine seems to have the GMT +9.5 hrs setting. I'd like to be able to have the option of burning my recordings, any ideas?
jokiin Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I'd like to be able to have the option of burning my recordings, any ideas? Have a look for posts by Colin2095, he has detailed how to access the recordings already, including HD recordings

FeOe_Vidz Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 2 technical questions here for those who may be able to help. 1: Why do I get so many "cannot find sequence header" errors when going through the recording in ProjectX? Admittedly I am talking HD recordings here, so it's probably just a signal issue, but I was just looking for a more accurate answer.... i.e. it's something to do with MPEG-2 encoding or something, which would make sense as well. 2: Does anyone know when/what shows are being/will be broadcast in 5.1 again, as I would have thought that anything on HD should be in 5.1 (assuming it was recorded that way, or can be transcoded as such), then just let the HD device, be it STB/PVR/TV w/HD tuner, convert the signal to whatever output system the user has. It's not like they'll take up any more bandwidth or whatever, as they already stream @ either 384/448kbps (7HD does 384 and 10HD does 448 - at least what I've seen anyway). On a separate note, this has been a great box so far, and I got it just in time for the newer seasons - have recorded a few good 10HD docos, and some from 7HD as well, not to mention keeping dad happy with some Smallville episodes (not sure where they're up to, be he's not too worried either), and me with The Shield and Brainiac. About the only thing I miss is the feature the Teac has with the 30sec skip button (can hold down and very quickly get like an hr into the show in 15 secs or so), but this box is mostly used for HDTV which can't be watched from the box anyway. I hope they have decent threads on the base panel/caddy the drive is mounted to, as it gets removed about once every 2 days or so, depending what's on.
Shansta Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 (edited) Picked one up yesterday.... Stuck a seagate 20gig drive in the thing - time shift works - recorded something (by pressing record) - no worries! I then tried to set up a recording through the EPG. It keeps saying "Invalid Start Time" when I press "ok"? Time zone is okay - current time displayed on channel info screen is correct. I tried entering a time manually - same S**t. Stumbled onto this thread - "upgraded" the firmware from jok11n's ftp (The version numbers were identical anyway) - still the same. Looks like back she goes...... Anyone else had this sort of drama? Shane. Edited February 28, 2008 by Shansta

May only be a problem related to today, EPG info comes from the network and apparently there is a problem at the moment with the EPG and the leap year, you might find it is ok tomorrow

Returned the 555 and swapped it (paid extra) for a digicrystal sdt 9007p - exact same problem... WTF? After removing whats left of my hair - rang tech support and sorted it out... (Didn't even think of the leap year). Digi's tech support A1 - guy answered the phone straight up and knew his stuff! (As a Virgin customer - this is a refreshing change!) Now I just gotta find 100 hours of crap to record.... If only I could hook my Foxtel box up <sigh> Cheers! Shane.
mutant Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 (edited) hi. just bought a 555u today. awfully loud buzzing/humming noise coming from the box when connected to the mains, worse when in standby.... crabcancer Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 hi. just bought a 555u today. awfully loud buzzing/humming noise coming from the box when connected to the mains, worse when in standby.... I think it is from the transformer in the box..... is this normal for this unit or should i go grab a replacement?? thanks Mine does not do that. Only a slight humming at start up when the HDD starts spinning. Unless your HDD is playing up or something?
mutant Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 thanks guys for the reply. After Colin's reply, I went back to Strathfield to get a new replacement. But the replacement has the same high pitch noise on standby. Interestingly, when the unit is actually turned on (with harddisk turned on and drawing power from the unit), the high pitched noise is gone. Back into standby, the noise reappears - It appears that the unit's transformer only makes the noise when it is not under heavy load. I asked what my partner thought of the noise - she thought nothing of it, so I guess it's not too bad. Don't know if anyone else has a similar problem with their unit...
