I just can't believe that we still don't have an all in one DVR, Hard Drive and High Def STB out yet. I've been patiently waiting for almost 10 months for Pioneer to bring theirs out, its been out for ages in Europe and UK.

I dont want to fork out for a sub standard SD STB. Surely we are being screwed by the manufacturers stalling on this technology thats already out all around the world.

Frustrating!!

Are you sure the Europe model of which you speak has a high-def tuner?

I found a solution for myself.

DVRs have not been selling well so stores are clearing their slow stock, I got a SONY RDR-GX7 which is built like a tank for less than $200. Then I got a LG HD pvr & connected them together -- HDMI 1080i PVR to TV, S-video PVR to DVR, component DVR to TV.

A few more connections compared to one unit, but it works ... for less than $1,000

Why do you want that for ???

I am after a combined all in one DVR, Hard Drive and High Def STB and Plasma/LCD. One remote , no cables , etc. etc.

LG are doing this now - we just need a quality brand to follow.

Sure, but it's fairly uselss if it only has one HD tuner. It's really a half-arsed PVR. It absolutely must have two HD tuners before I would be interested.

Anton,

I'm assuming that you can record shows onto your PVR is HD, however when transferring them onto the DVR, won't they be recorded onto DVD as an SD recording ?

If this is the case, is there any real advantage to this setup ?

I would have thought that the big name companies will wait to see which way the HD-DVD/Bluray issue pans out and then incorporate twin HD tuners into a HD-DVD/Bluray recorder.

Doesn't that make sense ?

If you want to record in HD, you'd also want to be able to burn the recording as HD as well (which standard DVD won't do - unless I am mistaken).

Makes perfect sense, but geez you'll be waiting a looooong time (years) for something like this!!

The OP talked about having DVR and PVR in one unit.

Disadvantage is that only comes in a SD config.

Advantage of my solution, albeit patchy, is I can have HD on the hdd.

Dvd recording (whether internal or external) is PAL, not even SD digital, hence I don't consider my having an external DVR a pq disadvantage to all-in-one.

Now you talk about Bluray/HD-dvd recording, that's hardly available standalone yet so who knows when realistically will we have it in a pvr to record HD digital. Too far away to wait for me.

True. Though the OP was talking about an "all-in-one" solution to capturing HD recordings onto HDD, then copying onto disc.

At present, as mentioned previously, this is only really available for SD. To do this properly for HD, the scenario I listed above is required....albeit quite a distance into the future (though I'm sure it is inevitable to happen).

Once 1080p TV's really kick off, manufacturers will have the demand for such products and I'm sure the market will be flooded with options. Until then, the few of us getting into HD now will have to wait and hand over big $$$'s when they are first released.

Of course, I would think that broadcasters etc. need to get behind HD more than they are now, to help this process along. Otherwise, what's the point of having a TV that can handle 1080p if there's bugger all 1080p content available to watch ???

dont you think all of this with a blu ray recorder would be over the top price wise. How much would you be will to pay for a product like this from panasonic or sony?

I wonder if those happy with their 68cm CRT's are saying the same thing about the 50"+ plasma/LCD screens ?

At the beginning when HD BR/HD-DVD PVR's are first released, like everything, they will come with a premium price-tag (maybe $1500 - $2000+ ??)....and those that "really" want the technology will pay the price (just like those paying $15K+ for the large plasma's now). As they become more widely accepted, and content becomes more readily available, prices will drop and manufacturing costs will fall, bringing the price down (allowing more people to afford the technology).

Do I think it will be over the top, price wise ? At the start, YES. But isn't every technology ?

You would assume this one is HD but it doesn't say.

Not sure on this one, but at least they even have a choice of a Digital Tuner from Pioneer!!!!!!!!

Why aren't they here? They are DVB-T Digital?!

Not happy!

Nope, I read it as an SD tuner with upscaling. Nevertheless, Pioneer has missed the boat badly over here. Panasonic have sold a sh1tload of their DVB-T models.
