Self-Deleted Posts

Featured Replies

Given a spate of a few members getting a bit annoyed and then going and deleting or editing their posts, the following has been implemented:

- Members can no longer delete their own posts

- You can edit your post for a preset period of time before it becomes locked.

Members do take the effort to make the posts, and others reply to them. It makes for disjointed discussions if members are just needlessly deleting/editing posts because they had a difference of opinion.

This has been invoked because of a number of incidents over the past few weeks. As always, open to feedback.

Whats the period of time before a post becomes uneditable? Sometimes, I'll go back and edit a long post to chomp out all the wordiness if someone has posted similar or identical info later on in the thread.

Hang on, I can't even edit the post I just made. Maybe more than a 2 second edit window is needed ;-)

Open to feedback on that. Currently, it's set to 10 minutes which seems a fair enough time to allow people to edit something.

This sounds like a fairly sensible approach. I'm assuming if there was a genuine need to remove/edit a post after more than ten minutes (eg duplicate posting), a moderator would be able to help out.

My personal preference would be for somewhat longer than ten minutes (an hour? a day?) - I believe most of the recent issues have been with much older postings.

Fair enough, altered to one day

DrP - The edit problem should now be fixed.

Thats fine by me it may also force users to re-read their post prior to posting of course depending on the subject and length of the post some may require at least 30mins :P

cheers laurie

ps funny thing though is sometimes I don't see my mistakes until I have submitted my post and read it like everyone else is!

thats my biggest problem, quite often I edit a post 3 times to get it right

Yeah same - the day's grace should help you, and should minimize 'anger-deletion'.

Yes...a day is fair ..I quite often will not see a mistake till someone might make a post that means what I have posted has been misinterpreted...hopefully I will see that or if not, just repost with the correction

PS However.... a 10 minute delete ability would not be a bad idea so that if people make a post in haste, they can delete it within ten minutes....this 10 minute delete ability with the gained knowledge that the post will be there after 10 minutes and unalterable after a day, may well stop a nasty thread from developing.

A days grace should be enough time for me to sober up and edit the previous nights supposedly witty comments.

Fossil - that feature isn't available unfortunately. What I would do instead, would be to edit the post, write "TO BE DELETED" - and then simply PM me to get it removed...

...either that, or don't write posts when angry

I'am very pleased with this development. With members like captainatomic having a hissy fit and deleting all their posts was a ridiculous way for the member to act.

Is there only one member with the ability to edit/delete posts (ie Coral)?

DBA should be able to do it as well as they are in the Administrators group.

Question: What about Sticky/FAQ threads that need to be changed often? Eg, I will need to change the LCN list soon to reflect the changes of D44 to include ACC.

Winston,

Doh. I never thought of that. If I have to update my DTV Card Roundup, I can't with the new system.

Yes...Coral...Of course I was just offering that idea for members....did not have myself in mind there...lol...although I do go back and try to get my posts readable...I seem to always be able to find some way to make them more understandable...sometimes I need 5 or more goes at a post to get it as right as I can so folks won't missunderstand what I post...Yes...how it is is fine by me.

Yes Kenneth, we have a sticky post at the head of the DVD and HDD recorders about Topfield FAQ that was being updated by Koops now and then

Anyone who maintains a FAQ, I'll consider placing them into a "FAQ Maintainer" category so that they can edit as they need to. PM me privately with the URL of the FAQ you maintain, and I'll see to it.

PM essential so that I have a paper trail.

How's that sound?

---

At this stage the following need the ability to edit recurring threads:

-Gclark8 (SBS Radio Roundup)

-Koops (Topfield)

-Kenneth (DTV Card Roundup)

-Winston (LCN)

Nominate any others I've overlooked (my apologies if so)

Sounds good.

As my name is already in your list, I guess I don't have to PM you.

Isn't Coral like a God? Nice to deal with but terrifying with his lightning (Avatar). I'm sure some here will kneel before you oh mighty one!

Laugh, the avatar is actually Sydney around about this time last year! Maybe I should replace it with some hail pictures I took last Sunday *grin*...
