Looking for a general consensus on this.

When you subscribe for a new account, the current procedure is that you must first activate the account. This process basically involves the system emailing you a "Please click here to confirm your account" email which involves you clicking on it to activate your account.

I am thinking of ditching this process in light of the number of "Why can't I post" emails I receive each week because people haven't followed this instruction. This has both pros and cons.

Generally, would this be an acceptable alteration? I gather if people have filled out the relevant information, then they want to be part of the discussions.

Coral,

While I agree that the confirmation can be a bit of a pain (eg I use my work computer to register, but I want to register using my private email address, and then have to webmail to do the activation, etc), my concern, would be if this made the forum open to automated registration engines, spam posting and address harvesting.

By removing the "activation" requirement, I presume this also means registration using false or non existent email addresses would be able to be used?

Cheers

JB

Registration using 'fake' emails would become a problem - however, automated signups are protected against because of the 'Security Code' the signup process asks for before the account is created.

Provided members are protected against spam - then I don't have any objection.

If the sign up process is to hard for some people to follow and they are itching to have a look around they can be a guest.

I have a web site and have a sign up page and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who register dodgy email address's jst for something to do.
