No problem. If I wasn't using the upsampling, I could happily have lived with the Weiss as a roon end point. But, as the MU1 does upsample, I am using it for what it provides as a component; which I enjoy the sound of more. I hope that helps with what you were wondering Atriya. I personally didn't compare the components together in a scenario where each one wasn't used to its fullest capability. There are other reasons I bought the MU1 other than upsampling. I also wanted to have my roon core within the streamer/upsampler, rather than on my macbook pro. It all comes down to your personal use-case scenario I guess mate. I previously used the Weiss as DAC only with a bluesound node X. That was good too, plus I also had spotify, along with all the other music platforms. But I personally prefer roon with Qobuz and Tidal, and don't listen to Spotify anymore.

Hi Atriya, I prefer the MU1 via AES to my DAC501, over Weiss internal renderer. The Weiss renderer sounded fantastic, but the MU1 4x upsampling through the Weiss is even nicer to my ears. The MU1 is really excellent product. I hear great things about the MU2, and it would have saved me money overall by reducing costs on additional power cable and AES/EBU cable just having a DAC/Streamer combined. But, I have made good use of the Room EQ functionality in the Weiss, which has been fantastic for optimising my listening experience in my apartment. So having separates has enabled me to be able to play quite a lot with the sound to make it best for my personal listening taste. It's been a long time since I have logged into the forum so I apologise for the belated response. I finished my spiral down the rabbit hole of acquiring the system pieces I was after, so since last checking on here, I have been just happily enjoying music. The only thing I would ever upgrade if I moved from my apartment to a larger home, would be perhaps finding full range speakers. In my space though, the Genelec G5's are brilliant. My completed system for now and into the foreseeable future is as follows: DAC: Weiss DAC501 Mk 2 STREAMER: Grimm MU1 Network Server SPEAKERS: Genelec G5 Active Speakers INTERCONNECTS: Cardas Clear Beyond XLR Nordost Valhalla 2 AES/EBU ISOLATION: HRS E1X Isolation Platforms for MU1 and DAC 501 Stillpoints Ultra 2 under Grimm MU1 POWER: Nordost QB4 Mk 2 Power board Nordost Valhalla 2 (Mains to QB4) Nordost Valhalla 2 (QB4 to Weiss DAC501) Nordost Tyr 2 (QB4 to Grimm MU1 ) Nordost Frey 2 x 2 (Genelec G5’s) NETWORK: Vertere HB Pulse Ethernet cable Acoustic Revive Network cable SOtM switch GROUNDING: Shunyata Altaira Chassis Hub Shunyata Alpha Grounding cables

I did have a look at Jplay already agisthos. I had a try of their IOS app via the free trial. Unfortunately some files played whereas many did not from my tidal service. That could be due them being MQA files, which aren't supported by my Weiss. Anyway, as it was hit and miss and I am more comfortable with Roon, especially now equipped with the MU 1. Appreciate you letting me know about it though. Thank you. I ordered the two Nordost Tyr 2 Power cables today. Look forward to getting them hooked up in a few weeks time, when delivered.

Thanks agisthos. I thought I read somewhere that grounding cables had to be connected to your components somehow (eg: into empty RCA port or otherwise) to get benefits. I watched a review just earlier from Jays audio lab on youtube who spoke highly of the improvement. I wonder how it would play out in my system with just a kore 1 rather than 3 or 6...

I'm hoping it will arrive by the end of the month, but it may be early October when the Muon Por arrives. I will let you know after using it a little while then. Guessing the Waversa systems device you mean may be the W smart Hub network switch? If so, I trialed one for about two days. I didn't notice any sonic improvement and it costs a little. Perhaps it needed a few more days to heat up the oxco, but if so I just didn't have long enough of a loan to tell. I just read about the Qkore 1. Not sure I can do anymore for a while after these last two power cables. To be honest, I'm hoping I don't get pulled down a rabbit hole again as things should be singing by the end of the month so I hope after that, I am well and truly done for a while.

Quite a journey thus far, but it sounds like you have exercised good tactical patience whilst technologies advance/ are evolving, rather than just pulling the trigger on things at a whim. I have seen the Qnet, it does look like a really expensive proposition and I can't help but think that although there may be minor gains, that investment might bear more fruit if (at those prices) invested in other areas first. The DAC's you mentioned DO both review extremely well. I have been really happy with the Weiss, and I am sure you will find something that suits your ears best of all, when auditioning begins on that front. Another ground up produced audiophile network switch is the Phoenixnet from Innuos. It is at a similar price point to the aforementioned Qnet. I have actually ordered a Network Acoustics Muon Pro filter to see how that goes in my system. It was reviewed really well quite widely, so hopefully it will give some meaningful sonic improvement on the network side of my system.

I follow you, and appreciate sharing your thoughts. I found two places in Australia still selling Valhalla 2 1m cables at $7850. It’s very tempting to push the budget a little bit and try one V2/ one Heimdall2, then at least be as good as I can possibly go from mains to powerboard now. Then later on one day down the road, upgrade the DAC powercord from Heimdall2. What are your thoughts as far as DAC and Network upgrades for your system?

I have seen that quote before regarding Odin 2 and BH cables rest of system. Having the highest quality cord from mains to wall makes sense to me, being it would set the framework for the remainder of system. Would I be correct in assuming if Tyr 2/ Heimdall 2 is best combo, if there is notable increase as you move further up the line; then wouldn't Tyr 2/ Frey 2 be sonically better? I assume you mean Tyr 2/ Heimdall 2 suggested as being better than even Frey 2/ Frey 2??

Thanks for your feedback Agisthos. The dealer I got the Grimm from said that the Nordost cables would perform well on the board plus the DAC. He is aware I already have a decent Cardas clear I can use for the Streamer and was quite adament the DAC is the more important of the two to have a good power cable. I haven't had opportunity to try any Nordost cables, do you have any feedback on the step up in SQ from Heimdall2 to Frey to Tyr2 at all. Within my budget I could either go (note: this is for Powerboard first, then DAC) Heimadll2/Heimdall2; Frey 2/Heimdall 2; Frey 2/Frey 2; or Tyr 2/Heimdall2. I think Tyr 2 and Tyr 2 is likely out of my budget. Tyr 2 / Frey 2 is a maybe budget wise. But I'd be interested if you think jumping up the line is worth it in your opinion.

Hi Matt, The Grimm MU1 arrived and paired with the Weiss 501 is really nice! I've managed to pickup a Nordost Valhalla 2 AES/EBU which will arrive next week that should be better than the current cable I have now. I'm wondering if you have any advice as far as power cables, as I am currently looking for a high quality one to go from main outlet into a Nordost QB4 Powerboard. I think that the PC from mains to the powerboard should be the best quality one I can afford, as my both DAC and Grimm, plus my two speakers run off that. I currently have Cardas Clear power cables to my two Genelec Speakers, another Cardas Clear to my Weiss DAC501. The PC for the Grimm is just a standard one at present. I am thinking that the system would perform best if I move the Cardas Clear that powers my DAC and replace it on the Grimm MU1. Then place a higher quality PC on the DAC because after the powerboard, I feel the DAC is the next most important one as it does the most work and is the last component before my speakers. I have been looking at Nordost Frey 2 PC to run from mains to powerboard, and then another Frey 2 to the Weiss as it would be higher performance than the Cardas Clear. The other option to save some $$ was a Frey 2 to powerboard and then a Heimdall 2 to the Weiss. Your thoughts?

Sage advice Tom, thank you again. I have a friend who owns a store in Perth; he is communicating with the distributor on my behalf, so hopefully I can arrange a proper audition and go from there. I agree as well there are too many variables at play to make definitive decisions based solely on others feedback or reviews. They can sometimes be a helpful start point, but at the end of the day the best 'source', is our own ears and accompanying equipment.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your message. You know what, I think I have scoured the entire web and read just about every review on the MU1 currently published; the one you provided a link to included. I appreciate the heads up, and hope no issue at all attaching it there. I read about the Amethyst the other day actually. I hope the Optimizer worked well towards overcoming some of your room issues. Its handy you have a Medus/ Grimm combo, to get your opinion. One of the things that I wondered about was, as the Grimm upsamples (if you choose to utilise the recommended 4x resampling via AES/EBU interconnect option)........when the Weiss then does its processing of the data stream - would that kind of diminish some of the potential enhanced SQ that so many have remarked has been so impressive from the Grimm MU1 ? I wrote to both Daniel Weiss and Eelco Grimm to ask their feedback on the pairing of DAC501 with MU1, and the possible improvement if both systems are independently resampling. Both kindly replied which was great. Of course they both suggested the best course of action was I have a listen and make a personal assessment if possible. Unfortunately, I can't as there are no MU1's in Perth to try. Eelco commented that even though my Weiss has an asyncronous sample rate converter on its input, and resamples everything to 195 Khz; that does not mean I wouldn't profit from the MU1 low jitter and upsampling. Because his Ls1 system also has an asyncronous sample rate converter on its inputs, and you can very well hear a sonic improvement on it when using it with the MU1. Eelco said he didn't have a doubt there will be a sonic improvement with the MU1 on the Weiss. He went on to say, the only question is how large it would be, but that it could still be quite high. Would you be able to tell me if you experienced much improvement from your system Tom? Cause if you found there was with the Medus, I'd imagine it would be be quite discernable with my DAC501.

Hi agisthos, I've found the Weiss DAC501 to be so nice sounding. I was able to trial the 502 Mk1 version at my place for a few weeks and liked it immediately. I considered an Aurender streamer/DAC combo (the A15), but really didn't like the app. Moreover they didn't have Roon, which I started using recently and find great. I trialed it at my place also, but prefer the Weiss sound to Aurender. Interesting thing for me with the Weiss, (or I think source that is quite a revealing, reference level type unit); as soon as I changed to some really high-quality interconnect cables (my initial ones were Mogami, but now I have Cardas Clear Beyond), the sound and improvement to my ears was astonishing. The Weiss is pure and neutral, as are my Genelec Speakers; so the Cardas were "it" for me, as soon as I started listening. They were well above the budget I initially intended, but I'm so glad that I made the stretch for them. I tried a few other brands like Crystal cable, Siltech, Nordost, Chord company. But for my setup, I am so happy with them, and also with the Weiss DAC501. I don't really use the DSP feature set at all. I have played with it and it is extremely handy to have, but sound wise for me, not an essential. Before I bought the DAC, I initially had a Node X connected to my speakers via RCA. Now I've boxed the Node away to gift to my dad and currently have my Weiss connected via ethernet to my routers lan port, and I use the Weiss DAC 501 as a roon endpoint.

I have been looking for a streamer to pair with my Weiss DAC501 and have been impressed by lots of positive feedback about the Grimm MU1 paired with other DAC's. Apart from one review by Steve Huff, I have yet to know of any impressions from a MU1 connected to a Weiss 501/502 utilising the AES/EBU recommended connection by Grimm. Can anyone provide some feedback or impressions? I'm unfortunately unable to get a Grimm MU1 for a home test in my system.
