Vinyls - The Versions Discussion Thread
DCLK replied to Chowbotak's topic in Music, Musicians and Bands
From an artistic standpoint, PG is my favorite album. I like the combo of rock and blues, tracks such as Kashmir and Custard Pie resonate with me. The sound quality is very good as by then LZ has their own label, Swan Song and they have more control of how their recorded music should sound. I have a U.K. original, will check the matrix numbers later to see how close it is to the first version. Although I like this album best, I do not play it often enough because there are four sides, too lazy at times.... perhaps this is one of those album that I should get the CD.... As for LZ IV, if you can score a U.K. version, matrix A3/A3, you are getting the early stampers. You may want to ensure that Stairway to heaven plays well, this will be the most abused track and you would hope that you do not experience inner groove distortion. Good luck!!! -

LZIV: I have a Classic 200gm, original US ( not the hot mix) and U.K. first press version 2 with the correct feather on the label. First of all, this is not a good recording to start with, the worst of the 5 LZs under Atlantic. Because of this, the Classic is a very good copy to have. Listening to my US copy feels like having cotton buds in my ears. The U.K. copy is transparent and it rocks although the presentation is different from the Classic. I like them both. Good to have you guys posting as I have been heavily listening to LZ in the past three weeks so can voice out my observation. LZII: your copy is the same as mine, this is as good as it gets short of the holy grail Monarch copy. I hope you have a clean copy. Most original LZs are battered, I guess fans are party animals. -

A month ago, I bought two copies, one rl ss pressed at Monarch and one rl/lh ss pressed at Columbia. I also have a plum orange first press U.K., Version 2 (lemon song/ maid), a version 4 (she is just a woman) and Classic. The Monarch copy is RAW and it rocks! This copy is VG+/VG++ so there are some crackles and pops. The Columbia copy is near mint and sounds very very close to the Monarch and I feel the difference is probably due to different pressing plant. The U.K. version 2 at near mint is very close to the Monarch too and it is my current favorite. If only the Monarch is a clean copy...... I have not listened to the Classic for a long time so will give it a spin and let you know how it compares (just listened, sound quality is very good, very detailed, but the rl and U.K. still ROCK) We are all crazy guys having a few copies of the same title just to get the best sound .... -

I have the Classic, 2014 reissue and the first press U.K. (version 6) of LZ1. The problem with this album is getting a clean and playable copy of a 1969 original plus an excellent cover can be a challenge. It took me a while to find a nice copy. Therefore the Classic is a great copy and it sounds very close to the U.K. If one listens to the 2014 on its own, it is nice as well. If you get the chance, try to find a U.K. original. I will try to find a US first press, think they will be cheaper since more are pressed. As usual, it will take some time to find a good copy at a decent price. -
For serious Collectors. US press, SD7208, CRC, on the first 1841 Broadway label (Presswell plant), very early matrix 1A / 1A. Cover is rated at Excellent (VG++), and Record is also at Excellent (VG ++), play-graded, sounds very quiet and with no distortion. This is as good a copy as you can get for a rock record. Album has been cleaned using Disc Doctor cleaning solutions and Music Hall Vacuum record cleaner. S$85. Please whastapp 8479 9676. More photos available on request. Thank you.
