  1. Hi, Working my way through some upgrades ( bought the Oppo 103 I had asked for advice on ) I have Castle Harlech S1 fronts with Audio pros for balance of 7.1 , I'm looking at changing the Centre speaker so would like some advice. Usual recommendation is stick with same series/manufacturer but as the Harlechs are fairly old I'm assuming current castle centres may not match, suggestions appreciated I'm happy with current sub and the sateliites fit easily into the room Thanks
  2. took the day off work to amongst other things watch this at the movies with my better half saw session times on line turned up at theatre , at least an hour drive for us group of kids before us didnt end up buying tickets so we thought we'd dodged a bullet there at purchase point we are told its a mothers session, babies with mums and lights left on, no mention of this at theatre or on line still havent seen it just another reminder why we mostly watch movies on own big screen
  3. Recently upgraded projector to an AE4000 ( 3D doesn’t appeal ), had an AE500,Looking to maximize projector upgrade by adding Blu-ray I have a Pioneer DV-S969AVi DVD, HDMI out, no video upsampling , my Pioneer receiver of similar vintage doesn’t have HDMI, otherwise happy with current receiver There’s a TV and projector in this room and to date I've occasionally swapped HDMI cable over to watch TV on the big screen. Yesterday I did this and was impressed enough with HDTV to think I would do this more often, so a switching box or other alternative looks on the cards An option would be a Blu-ray player with 2 HDMI outs for TV & Projector and 5.1 Analog to receiver to get best of audio Assuming I could feed Skybox through Blu-ray player to either screen, and will need turned on to watch TV There appear to be two contenders Cambridge Audio 651BD Blu-ray player and Oppo BDP-103AU 3D Blu-ray Disc Player - HARDWARE MODIFIED Not sure if 651BD will play all discs like the Oppo or if I really need this , these are top end of budget Suggestions/Thoughts appreciated I don't post here too often but take in information and views on a regular basis, Thx to all contributors
  4. The combination of the DVD Player/HDMI signal/Panasonic Projector AE500? and Fatso? These get used primarily for watching movies, mainly 16:9 widescreen every now and again a 4:3 gets played ( eventually ). I use Fatso and often theres no indication of format on the disc/package. So everyones ready to watch and on comes the movie out of aspect , Format cant be changed on the fly, I must remove disk change format start all over.. can I easily change to other format = no can I readily remember how to change the format = no can I quickly understand the instructions = you know the answer Perhaps someone can embarrass me further and advise the fast solution or not, thx for opportunity to vent
  5. I have a Sonos system listening to internet radio & rapsody finally getting around to wanting to load cds onto a server There are a few options around looked at MusicM8 by Imerge, seemed a bit pricey but now Imerge is no more I wondered how support/updates could be handled. The Imerge connection had me seriously considering the $1900 The latest option I'm considering is being listed on TradeMe, a Solidstate VortexSpinner audio appliance. Uses free? Vortex software. not pretty but a bit easier on the pocket. My questions are, Can these types of equipment sound as good as a decent CD player? Has anyone any experience of Vortex or this VortexSpinner? Thx
  6. both sets are S1 no choice on placement of Howards due to size & layout of room the Harlechs are in a larger semi dedicated HT room so placement is better (with Audio Pro making up the balance of 7.1 speakers) I'll look into getting spikes before taking the Howards apart Thx to all
  7. Thanks for replies and humour I'm warming to them but wont get rid of the M18s in a hurry Ive found the Howards give a full sound regardless of volume, which I'll need to be careful with.. re neighbours Re careful placement ..speakers are parked in corners which I would of expected to bring on the bass. They Howards didnt come with spikes..(unlike my other sets)what impact on speaker performance would these have? The upfiring/bass/mid range has spread the sound around the room so no sweet spot as such, which is good as lay out doesnt really allow for an ideal listening position New gear always refreshs love of music so really enjoying revisiting music collection
  8. I've had some trouble with my Lambert M18s so was looking around for options simliar to the possible repair cost Purchased some Castle Howards S1 off TM Sound good Look good I'm familiar with the Castle sound as also have some Harlecks ( used for HT with Sub ) I felt the Harlecks didnt have enough punch/bass for me but was expecting the larger Howards would deliver The Lamberts did boom a bit (ok a lot ) but I felt that was more to do with position ( corners )..just didnt turn up for those tracks My question is if the Amp was changed so that I could select more bass ( current amp set up Plinius P7,Plinius M7 ) would the Howards suddenly develop the punch/bass speed I'm lacking Howards delivering in other areas especially where the Lamberts boomed Maybe I want my cake and eat it?
  9. I set up a Sonos system at home a while back but have yet to load all those CDs onto a hard drive. So started using mainly for internet radio. In the meantime a free trail of Rhapsody appeared where you can create playlists off their database ,discover new music and some old favorites lost long ago. all is well until free trial runs out and find NZ isnt a country they support I've since across comments on Aussie websites ( Rhyapsody also not available in Australia ) where theyve used a US based proxy server to get around this and sign up for service. has anyone managed to do this in NZ and if so are you prepared to share the secret with a barely computer literate music lover? Havent asked Sonos locally and I'm sure they cant be seen to condone this
  10. Nights From The Alhambra DVD & CD By: Loreena McKennitt Celtic type music, at a spectacular location, very mystical ,amazing on the eyes and ears Some very interesting accompanying instruments and passionate playing
  11. Heres the response I got on the question of third tuner Discussion Thread Response (CSRTECH!) 03/08/2008 04.07 PM Hi John, this feature is not available at the moment, the manual was printed to allow for future updates. This feature will be loaded from this end by about the end of the year. No technician will need to come out for this to take place. Thank you for your email, Disc space will disappear even faster then.
  12. I have an older Panasonic Plasma (Plasma 42" Panasonic TH-42PV500A)that was watched on 4:3 and 14:? with those black bars alongside the viwing area. The has been some 'burn in' which sounds more dramatic than it is. If you use the option that lightens those borders so they arent black that will reduce the possiblity of 'burn in' The picture doesnt look as nice when they arent black but you'll avoid this problem. I'm over it now but was a bit peeved originally. Enjoy
  13. My optical cable has been gathering dust as signal kept dropping from MySky to Amp ,Sky advised must be a problem with my Amp - yeah right ! Gave it yet another go over the weekend on a music channel and alls well could due to new Satellite? I seem to remember others had issues with optical cable..time to try again Perhaps if this issue is fixed 5.1 may follow? ( I'm cursing if MySky has 60G reserved for a service I'm not currently interested in using, dont recall any mention of this when I signed up for MySky ) Damn thing is forever full....
  14. I've been looking at one these for the purposes of accessing radio on the net and storing cds to play without the odd track I dont like. Assume cd playing would be an improvement for my audio source ( Musical Fidelity CD2 ) but not really intended as a CD player replacement, the 740c does appeal for that purpose . The review on this site has almost put me off the 640h and other reviews on the net dont rate the 640h much better Does anyone use the 640h and what do they think of it, re ease of use. Thx
  15. I have a 1 year old Plasma ( Panasonic TH-42PV500A ) that we thought was given plenty of time to run in, Contrast/Brightness 50% and variety of Aspects watched in first 200hrs ( how to measure this?) TV must have been on 14/9 more than others as the side bars are now a little brighter than the rest of the screen. Not a major but once you notice the eyes can’t resist checking it out. Burn sounds a bit of an exaggeration. Unfortunately I didn’t make myself aware of the side bar option to brighten these areas until now. It was on darkest (Black) when set up, assume this is default, I suppose it’s not an issue in the widescreen TV broadcast world. Panasonic referred me to a repair company to run a setting to possibly remedy. (Not covered by warranty) The repair co. hadn’t seen any to fix to date and it sounds like they would just wear out the side bars to the same level as the rest of the screen. Hassle & cost to maybe? fix vs level of burn not worth doing at this stage. I’ve set the side bars to the brightest level and will now wait 12 months and see how it goes. Purpose of the post is to make others aware of possible issue, personally I was wrongly of the view we had done all the right things and burn was no longer a Plasma problem. Did a search on this forum looks like this is old news to everyone but me Has anyone else gone through this exercise and successfully or otherwise addressed the problem in this way? Thx
