  1. Have you called Austar about the 'blocked' message. A while back I got the same message on my LG recorder. I rang Austar and they said the channels should not be blocked. They fixed it at their end and I haven't had the problem since.
  2. For all recordings and playback of video and music, from any source I've used, the display starts at 0:00:00 and advances by the second. I haven't used DV or USB input, but they should be the same.
  3. Explanation of thumbnail function from the 1888 manual: "Each title displayed in the Title List menu is represented by a thumbnail picture taken from the start of that title or chapter. If you prefer, select a different still picture from within a title. Press THUMBNAIL to make the current displayed picture the one that appears in the Title List menu. The still picture that you choose appears in both the Original or Playlist menu." Bought the 1888 in July 07 and the 397 in March this year.
  4. I can’t find a key on the 1888 remote that doesn’t activate a function on the 397 recorder. Keys on the 1888 and not on the 397 remote are: PIP: I.Skip: Zoom: Thumbnail: Chapter Add. Despite the shortcomings of the remote the 397D is a great machine and does what its designed for – recording video.
  5. Never any problems playing +R/RW and finalised –R/RW discs between the three machines I have. –RW discs have to be recorded to in “video mode” to play on a PC. The faulty discs I’ve had, and that’s about 3 or 4 (all Verbatum) in a total of 30-odd, had the errors at about the one-hour mark in SP mode for some reason. But the next recording on all was fine. If these functions work one machine they should work on every one. When LG changed to a remote with fewer keys maybe they thought no one would notice that some designated keys were missing. Also, as I stated in an earlier reply, I think it is badly laid out compared to older versions.
  6. Yes everything plus those three functions. I tried the older remote early on when I found that the 397 didn’t have those keys. I don’t use it regularly as I’m still using the 1888H recorder in another room. All you’ll get will be x2 and x4, that’s all the machine allows. The only recording problem I’ve had is using RW discs (freezing, break-up, etc.). This is probably the fault of the discs themselves, and doesn’t occur very often. I’ve recorded again on the same discs and their fine. I use Verbatum and Philips RW discs. As I said I’ve transferred SP VHS to hard drive and disc. It’s recorded digitally, so the original quality does not alter. The same applies to LP recordings. As long as you record in SP mode it should be OK. The 397D is the only “name” brand I’ve seen at those prices. Aldi sell their brand recorder now and again, but I don’t know anything about them.
  7. You can take the DR79922W remote off your list. Even though it activates the three functions above, I’ve found today it doesn’t respond to the AV Input key. The only thing I didn’t like about the 397d was the remote. Compared to older models I think it is badly laid out, and as I’ve mentioned earlier missing some keys. Many keys, including the numbered ones are hidden below a sliding cover and are small and too close together. Then the 1888H remote came to the rescue. One thing I like is "Fast Dubbing". I record movies (FTA, Austar) to the Hard Drive exclusively and edit them and “fast dub” them to “video” formatted RW discs. No problems with any brand of disc. I’ve never recorded anything for more than three hours but I can’t see any problems recording longer. Unless you connect the Hard Drive to a PC there is no way of defragging. I’ve only transferred VHS SP recordings, and it still looked like a VHS recording. The 397D is a great machine, especially at $298.
  8. Very good reception of all available channels from an outdoor aerial (shared distribution) in a townhouse complex in central Sunshine Coast, Qld.
  9. Yes, no problems. Another function accessible, which I haven’t mentioned and is the most used, is Instant Skip (15 sec). I also have a 5-year-old dvd recorder remote (model DR7922W) that works too. Don’t know about other series. Zoom is x2 and x4 only.
  10. Maybe check this web page: http://www.lg.com/au/support/parts/support-find-parts.jsp I discovered the hidden functions as I own both the 1888H and the 397D. In answer to two other questions... LG units are region 4 out of the box. The 7 zeros method does work. I've owned LG dvd recorders for five years and never seen a firmware update.
  11. Actually the 397d does have zoom and also PIP... but it's only accessible if using an older model remote control (eg RH1888H).
  12. Frostbites, The Strong HD model SRT5405 has 8 timer settings. Check it out on the Strong Australia web site and download manual. Regards, kjp
