Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if someone out there who is familiar with the specific equipment I have purchased could help me.
I have just purchased a Thomson DTI1500HD (high definition set top box) and a Sony RDRHX710 (160GB HDD DVD recorder). The TV I have is a Phillips widescreen capable of receiving HD digital signals (has 2 AV componet inputs for HD).
What I am trying to figure out is whether I can hook up the STB to the HDD DVD recorder to record the HD digital broadcasts transmitted from the STB?
So far, I have the following lead configuration:
Aerial: STB --> DVDR --> TV
Audio: STB (optical out) --> Amplifier/Sound system (optical in)
DVDR (coaxial out) --> Amplifier/Sound system (coxial in)
Video: STB (Component Y,Pr,Pb output -HD terminal) --> TV (Component Y,Pr,Pb input - AV4)
DVDR (S-video from line out) --> TV (S-video input to AV2)
Hook up from STB to DVDR: conventional AV leads (red/black/yellow) from "TV" output on the STB to "Line in 1" on the DVDR
The resolution when viewing broadcasts through the STB (AV4) is fantastic but the broadcasts viewed via the DVDR (AV2) are terrible (ghosting and diagonal lines) due to the analog tuner and of course records even worse than the old VHS - the aspect ratio is also stretched to fit the widescreen TV - eveyone is 20kg fatter. When I try to view the STB picture via the DVDR by selecting "Line 1" on the DVDR, I have no video just a white screen.
I've read in other posts on this site that DVD recording from a STB is possible (thereby recording digial video quality?) but I can't seem to figure out the right way to do it. I spoke to a sony technician and he thought that the Thomson STB may have a copy protection device disabling recording of the signal. Is this right? Is there some HDD DVD recorder/STB combinations that are incompatible? If so, is there a STB that would be compatible with my SONY DVDR? Is my hook up correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! It looks like I will be taking at least one of these gadets back.
Cheers,
Nathan
