We’ve seen turntables come back into fashion over the last few years, while some brands have even launched new cassette decks. Now, it seems Compact Disc is getting its turn in the spotlight — with products like DUNU’s Concept R “portable” CD player appearing.

We’re putting “portable” in quotation marks because it’s not really pocketable in the way you’d expect from something billed as “a Walkman for the future”. You’re certainly not going to be clipping this player to your belt or sliding it into a pocket for a casual stroll in the park. But if you’re planning to listen at home, it could be the nudge you need to dig out your old silver discs.

Up Close

Made from a solid block of aerospace-grade aluminium, the 1.2kg Concept R is a substantial piece of kit that looks and feels great. Its maker has clearly been inspired by retro CD spinners — stylistically, there’s a strong hint of mid-1980s Sony here. The disc tray takes up most of the space, while the mechanical button array on the right side is a tactile pleasure to use. It covers basic playback controls, along with a Play Mode button that lets you loop the entire album or a single track. Hold this button for a few seconds and you can also switch between Class A and Class AB amplification.

Additionally, a keypad on the top lets you jump directly to the exact track you want. If your CD has more than nine tracks, long-press the first number — 1, for example — then tap the second number, like 4, to skip to track 14. There’s also an eighties-tastic volume slider that’s super smooth and gives precise control over the listening level.

The front fascia sports a 2.08-inch monochrome display showing track number, amplification mode, battery level, and timestamps indicating your current position in the track. To the left is a robust slider that opens the CD tray lid, plus 6.35mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs. A 3.5mm jack would have been nice, but DUNU includes a 3.5mm-to-6.35mm adapter. The top-loading tray is well built, with a tempered glass window so you can watch the disc spin. Around the back you’ll find an optical digital output, a 4.4mm line out, a USB-C port for audio input and another USB-C port for charging the internal battery.

Inside is a 24-bit DAC said to be a fully differential, quad-channel balanced design. The amplifier, which can run in Class A or Class AB, outputs up to 1.3W — enough to drive most headphones or IEMs with ease. In use, volume rarely needed to exceed around twenty percent, and even 300-ohm headphones didn’t require much more headroom.

A large 12,000mAh battery grants the Concept R its “portable” status in the sense that you can move it from your office to the living room and beyond. It takes roughly 4.5 hours to fully recharge in testing, and curiously there’s no auto-off feature.

For evaluation, the player was paired with DUNU’s own Arashi headphones, Sennheiser’s HD 660 S2, and a set of custom IEMs. The Concept R drove everything with ease. Class A mode was preferred most of the time for its finer detail and more natural presentation.

The Listening

For a “portable” player, it sounds excellent. On the acoustic rendition of Fall Out Boy’s My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark, the presentation was clean, with subtle background percussion sitting clearly behind the vocals and piano. With Christian McBride Big Band’s Night Train, saxophones and trumpets confidently underpinned the guitar, each instrument occupying its own space yet blending convincingly.

K-pop cuts such as B.A.P’s Warrior and Boyfriend’s You’re My Lady revealed small details not often noticed on compact CD systems. The sound felt more spacious, with commendable soundstage width and stereo imaging. Even quieter piano accompaniments were easier to pick from the mix. Considering the price point, the Concept R proved impressive sonically.

The Verdict

DUNU’s Concept R might be exactly what you need to reignite a love for silver discs — or to discover the appeal of physical media for the first time. It sounds very good, has ample power for demanding headphones, and while not portable in the conventional sense, it’s easy enough to move from one listening spot to another. The cool eighties styling is the icing on a very sweet cake.
