Vale Dr. Neville Thiele

It is with great sadness we learned this week that Dr. Albert Neville Thiele OAM had died, aged 91. A distinguished audio engineer, best known for his development of the Thiele/Small parameters using in loudspeaker cabinet design.

Photo: National Library of VictoriaBorn 20th December, 1920 in Brisbane, Queensland, Thiele with colleague Richard Small developed the parameters now referred to as 'Thiele/Small Parameters'. A career spanning many decades revolved around the radio, broadcasting, audio and electronics industries.

Thiele was still very active in his research and pursuits up until shortly before his death. A long list of achievements, awards and accreditations, notably including Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 from the Audio Engineering Society, Medal of teh Order of Australia in the same year 'for service to audio engineering, particularly in the field of loudspeaker design and the development of audio engineering standards'. In 2008 the degree of Doctor of Science in Architecture (honoris causa) was conferred upon Albert Neville Thiele OAM at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning by The University of Sydney.

We read of something he taught his daughter, "Be passionate about what you do. It gives you an unfair advantage over everyone else in life".

It is fair to say that without Dr. Neville Thiele's contributions to the audio world we may not have been able to enjoy audio reproduction to the standard in which we benefit from today. A true legacy. Vale Dr. Neville Thiele.
