Technics Unveils SL-40CBT & SL-50C Decks at CEDIA 2025

Technics introduces its new SL-40CBT and SL-50C Direct Drive turntables aimed at both Hi-Fi users and modern home audio lovers.
Technics used CEDIA in Denver, USA, to show off its new SL-40CBT and SL-50C turntables, which feature classic 'Tech deck' characteristics, including the iron-coreless direct drive motor and high-precision S-shaped aluminium tonearm.

However, the company hopes that this evolution of a new, sleek design will meet the expectations of today's vinyl enthusiasts, both newcomers and those upgrading from entry setups.
Both SL-40CBT and SL-50C move away from the traditional aluminium die-cast chassis designs, opting instead for sleek, minimalist MDF wood construction with a high-quality finish in three modern colours. Technics lists them as: bold and eye-catching Terracotta, subtle and refined Light Grey or timeless and versatile Charcoal Black.
This new compact form factor not only provides seamless integration into modern interiors but also aligns visually with the Technics SC-CX700 Wireless Hi-Fi Speaker System, which is available in similar matching colours and reviewed here.

While the design has evolved, Technics is keen to assure you that the SL-40CBT and SL-50C deliver the same premium level performance the brand is renowned for.
Firstly, the iron coreless direct drive motor, as found in the likes of the Applause Award-winning SL-1200GR2, delivers stable, accurate rotation with high precision control circuitry, preserving the musical authenticity of even the most demanding genres of music.

Meanwhile, the die-cast aluminium platter with reinforcing ribs and directly mounted motor magnet promises reliable torque transmission and accurate drive characteristics.
The new turntables also benefit from a freshly designed S-shaped aluminium tonearm, said to offer ultra-precise vinyl groove tracking, preserving subtle nuances and musical dynamics of any vinyl recording.

Finally, improved insulator feet are optimally tuned to provide high vibration resistance, enabling the turntable to be placed in the best environment within the home without sacrificing stability or sound quality.
Technics SL-40CBT
Offering plug-and-play convenience, the SL-40CBT promises superior sound via its built-in, high-quality Phono-MM equaliser, allowing you to connect it to a music system without the need for a dedicated Phono input for effortless connection and ultimate usability.
Meanwhile, the factory-fitted Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge is renowned for its sonic finesse, offering precise groove tracking and excellent detail retrieval. Its conical stylus ensures broad compatibility with standard phono MM inputs in hi-fi amplifiers or separate phono stages.
As well as 33 1/3 and 45 RPM capabilities, the SL-40CBT includes Bluetooth connectivity enabling wireless audio streaming to Bluetooth compatible speakers and devices – including mobile ones – offering excellent flexibility for placement and playback in any home environment, states the company. Although we do not yet know which Bluetooth version or codecs are supported.

Technics SL-50C
The SL-50C is also ready to go straight out of the box, thanks to a factory-fitted cartridge, this time in the shape of the highly-regarded Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge. The 2M Red is an award-winning design known for delivering an open, dynamic sound with a slight touch of warmth. It comes pre-mounted with an elliptical stylus and provides wide compatibility with amps and separate phono stages.

Technics' new SL-50C also adds 78s to its 33 and 45 speed selection, accommodating a wider range of record collections. Outputs include a standard phono out and a line out, offering you the choice of using a separate phonostage or connecting directly to powered speakers, for example.
The Technics SL-40CBT and SL-50C will be available in the US beginning September 2025 at authorised Technics retailers. The SL-40CBT will be priced at US $899 | A $1,299 with Australian delivery from the 1st of October. Technics has not yet confirmed the price for the SL-50C, with details for other regions still pending.
