The diminutive system features three midrange drivers, three tweeters, and one subwoofer crammed into a compact package.
Using speakers aimed left and right as well as centre speakers, according to Technics the Ottava S SC-C50 is able to produce a “room-filling soundstage.”
Additionally, a “directivity control horn” reduces mutual speaker interference. Technics says that the system’s tweeters can produce up to 50kHz, far beyond the hearing range of your average human.
The 3.1-channel amp powers the unit and delivers 20w each to the three speaker channels in the unit plus 40w to the sub.
The OTTAVA S SC-C50 looks pretty neat too. It has a thick aluminium top panel that helps increase the rigidity of the chassis, as well as an OLED display surrounded by ring keys for easy operation.
Around the back, louvres add further eye-candy while also helping with cooling.
As you would expect, the system also supports hi-res audio. It will play nice with PCM formats such as WAV and FLAC up to 384kHz/24-bit as well as DSD in 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz flavours.
The speaker system also offers Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal on tap, as well as internet radio. Finally, Bluetooth and WiFi are also catered for.
Aside from wireless connectivity inputs include one optical digital jack, one auxiliary input with a 3.5 mm stereo jack, and USB–A.
Like a growing number of new speakers released these days, the SC-C50 supports Chromecast built-in, making for easy multiroom streaming via Wi-Fi.
Even better, if another speaker connected to the same network supports Google Assistant, you can use voice control to control playback and other functions on the Ottava S SC-C50.
You can place the S SC-C50 wherever you please as Technics has equipped it with technology it refers to as 'Space Tune'. Although it sounds a little sci-fi, it is actually a choice of three preset modes that optimise the speaker in relation to its mounting position. From there, a built-in microphone lets the speaker system automatically adjust various settings based on what it hears in the room.
Technics says its latest release won't be available until October, and local pricing has not yet been confirmed.
