Tannoy Super Gold Speaker Range Announced
Tannoy's Super Gold range of passive dual concentric driver speakers taps into the UK brand's heritage of professional studio monitoring.
Tannoy continues to build on its 95-year speaker development, design and manufacturing history with its new Super Gold range of speakers. And just like the original Monitor Gold, the Tannoy Super Gold range of speakers is designed and manufactured in the UK.
The Tannoy Super Gold range of speakers comprises three models – Super Gold 10, Super Gold 12 and Super Gold 15. All are designed, so we are told, to reproduce music exactly as the artists intended it to sound. This is no empty boast either, as there is a direct link between these domestic models and the company's Monitor Gold, which has been used in professional recording studios since the 1960s. Epic albums by artists such as Michael Jackson, Elton John, The Eagles, Billy Idol, Depeche Mode, Christina Aguilera and many more have been mixed and mastered on Tannoy studio monitors.
Each model number reflects the size of the driver, with all the drivers sharing the same dual concentric design with the high-frequency driver merged into the centre of the main driver's cone, a format invented by Tannoy in 1947 and used in the classic Monitor Gold.
This true point-source concept has the entire frequency spectrum originating from a single point with both drivers on the exact same axis. Tannoy states that this approach ensures unmatched off-axis performance and pristine phase coherence.
As these will be sat in living rooms rather than in front of studio consoles, a 2-way energy control system is located on the front of the speakers on the 10- and 12-inch models, with the SGM 15 featuring a 3-way energy control system. Furthermore, the UK company states that thanks to the Super Gold range's front-firing bass ports, the cabinets can be placed against walls or in corners without sonic compromises.
We are also informed that those cabinets are dense and rigid, offering balanced control of low-end performance. Different Material Technology and heavy-duty 24-carat multi-layer, gold-plated custom binding posts also ensure optimum signal transmission and integrity.
Andrew Provan, Tannoy Production Manager, told StereoNET:
The unveiling of the Tannoy Super Gold Monitor speakers marks a momentous milestone in Tannoy's History. With its rich heritage dating back to 1926, these speakers represent a harmonious fusion of vintage aesthetics and cutting-edge engineering, offering audiophiles a truly immersive listening experience.
North American pricing and availability has not yet been confirmed, but overseas the Tannoy Super Gold Monitor range is available with prices starting at £5,995 for the SGM 10. The SGM 12 costs £6,995, and the SGM 15 sells for £8,495.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
